AL.com reports that Bama has penalized Pannunzio

The penalties were for introducing a player/recruit to a booster. Basically they froze his salary, and then didn't offer an extension.

That article says this was in a yearly report and the way I am reading it, it seems like it happened in the past. I think the timing is just a coincidence.

Amen. The biggest injustice of this whole thing is that Pannunzio is as guilty as anyone, but Nevin likes him (or got money from him) and wouldn't turn on him as a result. We should get off light just for Shapiro enabling the worst special teams coach in school history.
