The "Players" vs "Scheme" debate is getting tired and a bit grassy-esque if you ask me.
It's not one OR the other, but both that go hand-in-hand that makes a defense good vs bad.
I mean sure, GREAT coaches can cover up for talent deficiencies. Also, GREAT players can cover up coaching inadequacies.
These situations are the exception, not the norm.
As Miami fans, we need to accept the fact that we have neither right now. So we're going to need both players and coaches to improve.
When both suck, you get the 2012 Miami Hurricanes.
When both are great, you get the Bama's of the world (my point is it's not common)
The talent is hopefully on its way to getting better. It's just really really young. They also will learn this new scheme after a while (fingers crossed).
Also, even though Golden isn't a Nick Saban, he also isn't a Randy Shannon or Larry Coker. He's a proven solid (at least) coach and this team will improve under him. Will we win championships? No idea. But we will get better as his system manifests itself in Miami.
Winning is pretty simple, especially at a place like Miami. We have above average coaches IMO (not great). We will soon have a pretty good group of talent on the roster (feeling good about our recruiting). Once everyone gets on the same page and matures together, we will see more W's. It's just probably not going to happen as fast as we'd all like.
The point of this post is to point out that it's crazy to argue whether its the scheme or players thats causing us to be the WOAT defense. It's both thats causing our struggles.
We have zero upperclassmen with talent, and the underclassmen (although maybe talented) are way too young/under developed.
We're also in the middle of a scheme transition. We currently don't quite have the horses to run the defense coach wants to (possibly being stubborn if you ask me). GT's defense is an example of this. Al Groh is highly regarded as a DC, but GT's defense has been terrible up until this year (jury is still out however. they did look pretty good against VT though).
I think 2013/2014 we'll see a big jump in production from coaches and players. How big is yet to be seen. One thing is for sure tho, we have a LOT of work to do...
As for this year, hang in there boys
