And that was in anticipation of upcoming scholarship restrictions.

Is that plan still in place? It seems like we are on a lot of remaining players.

Also I keep hearing people say that with Paul and Finnie leaving we can sign 2 more players but if Golden is sticking with his 15 number then any player we lose just cost of depth.

Last year Golden said ~33 and that's how many signed. having said that, we seem to be in good standing with too many remaining players to have a class of just 15-17 imo.

I wouldn't believe anything Golden says at this time of the year with regards to how many scholies he
is going to give out.
And I don't say this as a knock on the UM HC, it just seems to me that it would not be wise to
let the opposition know how many kids we will take in.
Let them figure it out....after signing day.

With regards to cutting back on scholies given in anticipation of looming sanctions, my philosophy on that
is if the NCAA is going to take their sweet time and not send us that NOA before signing day, I will
sign as many players as I can not exceeding the normal 85/25 limit.
No way we should punish ourselves on this recruiting cycle when we've been punished enough as it is this
last cycle.

He knows some are transferring and Im sure some will be cut so thats going to open up extra room.. Might as well load up before the NCAA starts taking scholarships away

Here is the one thing I have learned since I started to follow recruiting:

The numbers always work out.

The sooner guys forget about the numbers and "doing the math, the better off you'll be.
They know what they are doing and how to make the numbers work.
Who cares if the opposition knows? It's not a secret.

I wasn't really worried about the numbers. I was more worried about if these players we are losing will be replaced in this recruiting class or if we are losing quality depth.

Absolutely. I don't mind encouraging running marginal kids to seek other options. But, losing guys who have significant experience scares me a little - just a little.

Self imposing schollies is interesting. Is it 25 per year or up to 25 with a cap of 85?

The NCAA won't look at imposing a scholarship limit when it comes to penalties. I think Golden or someone serious said this himself. I def read it somewhere, though.

From there, I haven't heard Golden say the 15 number in months. If he said it recently, I just haven't seen it myself. Anyhow, either way I imagine UM expected to receive the NOA by now, but considering how long it's now taken maybe they possibly have decided to not worry about limiting schollies in this class as a way to self-penalize (if this can be done with the NCAA taking it into consideration). Since we will probably now won't receive penalties (if anything serious) in time to where it really affects the 2013 season.

Exactly the way I see it.

As for taking less players in anticipation of sanctions that makes ZERO sense. I never understood why you would want to take less players. The more guys you take now the more experienced players you will have on the roster when things get a little dicey in a couple years. Why leave holes on your roster now when you don't have to do that?

exactly what I thought we would do coming into this cycle. Grab as many studs as possible while cutting some fat before bracing ourselves for sanctions

Exactly! Get as many young guys on the roster NOW as possible. Then, when the sanctions kick in they will be the backbone of the team. This is the time to run off as much dead weight in the upper class as humanely possible and replace them with freshmans.

Actually, it can be a good thing not to let opposition know if we are going to self-impose this cycle.
Hence, not divulging, or being honest (to the media) with the numbers.
