I'm paraphrasing:
The numbers are in.
And they've put a big smile on strength coach Andreu Swasey's face.
With summer weight room testing done, this year's Canes shattered several all-time records. Those records, which are kept by position: Gus Edwards shattered Willis McGahee's running backs power clean record (362 pounds). Phillip Dorsett broke Sam Shields' record in the 40 (4.21 seconds; Shields had run a 4.26), Jamal Carter broke the safeties' power clean record (318, bettering Sean Taylor's 308), Jon Feliciano broke the offensive guard record in the power clean (362), Denzel Perryman broke the linebackers' squat record (605), walkon Ronnie Regula broke the tight ends bench record (415 pounds) and walkon Stephen Sweeney broke the receivers' bench record (360, the previous mark was 355).
Another record that might be broken ... sort of: The time it takes QB Ryan Williams to get back on the field off an ACL tear suffered late this spring.
Williams has started running and even led a drive in recent 7-on-7 work.
"He drove them down like it was nothing," Swasey said. "There's nothing wrong with his arm, his decision making, I can tell you that."
In Swasey's opinion could Williams be back for game 1?
"He's way ahead, doing real good," Swasey said. "[Trainer ] Luis (Feigenbaum) has done an unbelievable job with him on getting him back in. He's doing a lot of stuff already, is looking real good.
"Let's put it this way - for what his calling is as a quarterback, for what he has in our offense, I can see that. Because we're not asking for him to go run routes. He's looking real good and his progress is looking real good. He's really in good spirits because of how well he's doing."
Swasey spoke more about players at each position:
Ryan Williams has already started working into 7-on-7's coming off a torn ACL
* Of new QB arrivals Jake Heaps, Malik Rosier and Brad Kaaya, Swasey said, "That's a great group of guys. It has really enhanced our quarterback position because of the competition. And I don't know who it may be that can be second, third or fourth, I don't know, which is a good thing because they're very competitive. They compete well. It's a very good group of quarterbacks."
* At running back, Swasey said of Duke Johnson (who has gone from 210 pounds to 205) that "he's stronger, faster - every number is up. He's been tremendous with his work ethic and his development. He's been on it."
Is this the best version of Johnson, who is coming off a broken ankle, that Swasey's seen?
"Yes, by far," Swasey said.
Of Yearby, Swasey says, "He's very strong, was squatting 315 when he came in and now he's at 425. He's really done a great job out there in 7-on-7. He's looking good, looking strong, has put on good lean mass."
* Swasey says WR Braxton Berrios is back full go off injury.
"He's looking real good, looking real promising," Swasey said.
Has any receiver made a big jump from the spring?
"As a whole, the whole receiving corps has made a jump," Swasey said. "A lot of it is just more maturity and also development with the confidence in what they have as a group. Like Stacy (Coley), now he has a whole offseason under his belt. Herb (Waters) is a lot bigger and stronger looking great. I think Malcolm (Lewis) will be very shocking. He's lean, running as fast as he's ever run. There's a lot of promising things I've seen this summer."
Swasey said Dorsett's 4.16-second hand time on one of his 40-yard runs was legitimate, but Swasey says if he listed that as Dorsett's actual 40 "people wouldn't believe me ... I'd rather just let him run by them."
Swasey says Dobard has been "an animal in the weight room"
* At tight end, Stan Dobard has caught Swasey's eye.
"His whole body composition has changed," Swasey said. "He's been an animal in the weight room.
* On the offensive line Swasey says "Ereck Flowers has done a great job in the offseason. Danny Isidora is doing an unbelievable job. And Shane (McDermott) is back and has done some good things. It's a lot of positive, guys that have developed even more."
* Swasey spoke about newcomers Chad Thomas and Michael Wyche on the defensive line.
"Wyche has already lost weight, is down to 343 from 360. We don't want linemen that size (360)," he said. "Chad is unbelievable. he's about 260 now, is doing a great job. He's very mature, I like his mindset. He's a good kid, a smart kid."
* Who is standing out to Swasey at linebacker besides weight room freak Denzel Perryman?
"A lot of them - (Raphael) Kirby, Thurston (Armbrister) has put on good size and weight," Swasey said. "I like (Darrion) Owens. Jermaine Grace, he's fast (4.49 40)."
* Swasey says the defensive backs are especially impressive.
"They're such a competitive group - I don't know who is doing bad - everyone is doing real well. We've got a good crop of guys."
* Who are Swasey's weight room freaks?
"You know Denzel has to be one of the freaks," he said. "And Dorsett plus I'd say Gus (Edwards). Gus the Bus with Duke. Those guys are doing things that are great."
