November 27, 1965: On this day 59 years ago, the fifth ranked Fighting Irish of Notre Dame and Miami Hurricanes played to a 0-0 tie in front of 68,077 fans at the Orange Bowl. Pictured below: Notre Dame fullback Larry Conjar fumbles the ball which is recovered by Miami's Larry Bodie. Miami was the team in white jerseys. The Hurricanes, coached by Charlie Tate, wore gold helmets and pants from 1964 to 1969. It was the only tie in the history of the Miami vs. Notre Dame rivalry.

This game played an important role in Miami Dolphins history. At the time, Miami was recently awarded an expansion franchise from the American Football League. Team owners Joe Robbie and Danny Thomas held a contest to name the team. More than 19,000 entries were submitted. Of those entries, there were 2,100 different names. The name "Dolphins" drew the most responses. The tie breaker would go to the person who came the closest to naming the final score of the 1965 UM vs. Notre Dame game. Miami housewife Marjorie Swanson was the only person who predicted a scoreless tie. Swanson won 2 lifetime passes to Dolphins games.
