4th down on their 33, down by 4, and punt?

Fireable offense, IMO. The BEST possible outcome did in fact happen (punted to the one) and it didn't matter. Basically, they get the ball at the 20 nine out of ten times in that situation.

We played to lose.

a half decent defense keeps them pinned down there, not march all the way down the field

Offense was struggling

You sure as **** aren't going to kick a field goal

And whether you like it or not, the defense made some stops in the second half.

Whats really gonna **** u off is we should have had 10 extra yards of field position. Dorsett ran it out and only got to the 15 instead of the 25. 10 more yards and we can at least attempt a field goal. He is not a good return guy.

I too felt that punt was a mistake. Our defense was not going to stop them there, they just had more space to attack us.Our defense is much better when teams reach our 20 because there's less room to cover or mess up.

You have to try the FG there. You just told your kicker he can't cut it the rest of the year.

Maybe he can't, but that was your best play.

E- Unless the wind was that bad. There's your only out. Otherwise, it was a timid, ultra-conservative call.

That was the problem. Barth was missing and that dude is money. We kick, miss, and they have the ball on the 35-40 yard line. 25-30 yards and they are in FG range.

You do anything except punt in that situation.

Golden is a *****.

Fully agree with the OP. Anytime this team passes the 50 yard line they need to go for it on 4rth down if it's 10 yards or less. Conventional field position wisdom does not apply to the 118th ranked defense.

Do the math Al. If your D has held opposing teams to 1 punt in the last 15 possessions then you cannot afford to put them on the field. Twenty yards field position means nothing with this defense - it's 2-3 running plays if that.

I think if we pick up any yardage on 3rd and 10 then we go for it. 4th and 10 when the D had created 2 punts on 3 possessions (other a 48 yards FG) in the 2nd half, I think punt is the right choice.

The only surprising thing about the decison to punt was that UNC didn't have a 4 play 99 yard TD drive. They drove 80 yards and choked.

We did that in the first or second posession, too. Punted on 4th and 6 from their 40, and UNC ran it out to about the 35, and scored a go ahead TD within seconds.

Stop punting in their territory.
