Another big win for the Canes, with the usual hurdles included. Here's some thoughts on our win against 4th and 14:
Offense
Offense
- What a game for Cam Ward. After his arguably worst quarter of the season, he turned it up in the second to finish with 400 in the air and 5 TDs to finishing it out.
- With Cam you take the great and the sometimes bad. Granted, it's good 90% of the time, but that INT he threw was very Cal-like. Thankfully it didn't matter, but against a better opponent that would be an absolute killer.
- There was some underneath stuff that Cam missed. On the INT, he had Martinez in the flat in what would've probably been a first down.
- Cam went RPO on that down where he fumbled. Looks like Dawson drew up a run and Cam changed it at the line.
- All in all, there's a reason this guy is the #1 QB in the country. It's remarkable to see what he can do.
- WRs had some big drops in the first half that killed drives and momentum. Luckily, they cleaned it up in the second.
- Congrats to Xavier Restrepo on another great game and for entering the record books. X is an all time great Cane. He can play with the best of them. It's even better that he's a great guy, solid human being. Guy deserves everything he has and more. In the story of Miami's turnaround from irrelevance to national aspirations, Restrepo is one of the main characters.
- Great performance from JG3. His TD catch was a back breaker, and he had a crucial catch on 3rd that kept a scoring drive alive. Also, no stupid ****.
- Sam Brown with another good game, albeit he probably should've scored on his long catch. Looks like he slowed down going into the endzone.
- Riley Williams, what a ******* catch at the end of the game. Him and Arroyo are very good TEs, I wish Dawson would prioritize them more in the passing game.
- Lofton man, he's going to be a great one. The fact that he's a true freshman is remarkable.
- OL was better, for the most part, in pass protection. Run protection was very good. This group bounced back pretty well after a bad outing against FSU.
- Martinez and Fletcher with another good game. This offense is #1 not just because of Cam, but because our run game can keep up with anyone.
- All in all, minus a disastrous 2Q, this offense was great. We can compete with any team in the country with an offense like this.
- Where do we even start? For 2-1/2Qs, this Defense was an unmitigated disaster. Duke scored TDs on drives exceeding 75 yards four times in a row.
- Our DL has talented personnel, but we're always a second late to the QB. Teams have done a very good job of prepping their QBs to get that ball out quick. It's infuriating, but it's what happens.
- DL has a tendency to over pursue any QB and take bad angles. It's incredible the amount of times a QB can spin out of what looks like a collapsing pocket against us.
- One issue with our D is that we rarely generate TFLs on first or second down. We never get anyone behind schedule. This is not a defense that can consistently stop 3rd and short. Also, teams will just go for it in any scenario that's 4th and 3rd or less.
- OJ Frederique is going to be a great one. Him and Damari playing opposite each other is going to be something to see. Thankfully, Damari should be back soon, and this defense will look better as a result.
- Zaquan Patterson needs to get more burn. ****, he needs to start. Played well today and has a twitch that a guy like Jaden Harris just doesn't have.
- I hope that Jadais Richard is alright, but it looked serious. Praying for him.
- Duke's offense has been atrocious all year. In the first half, we made Malik Murphy and Duke's O look like a juggernaut.
- This defense continues to routinely give up chunk plays. Our alignment on downs is consistently bad, and our gap integrity is non-existent at times. Genuinely, I don't know what the **** Lance Guidry is doing half the time. At this point, it's just an expectation that he's going to get cooked week in and week out. We kept on getting cooked in man coverage and it wasn't till the very end of the half that we finally went to zone.
- One thing that helped this defense finally come alive was generating TOs. We have struggled to generate TOs all year. For whatever season, teams just don't turn it over against us. Not today though. Four TOs is a season high (maybe even a Mario era high?), and it completely shifted the momentum of this game. Bad defenses can look decent by generating TOs. Decent's gonna have to do for this team, especially with the secondary we've got. Generating two TOs a game would make a world of difference for this defense.
- We continue to miss tackles. It's absolutely infuriating, and at this point I don't see how we clean it up.
- We cannot continue to do stupid **** on the back end of this defense. Two drives were extended by dumbass penalties. Tyler Baron, come on man.
- Lance Guidry stop it with the ******* stunting please. Again, we're getting gashed.
- For the first time since 2017, Miami has won 9 games in a season. This is only the 7th season in 20 years that Miami has 9 wins. It's not nearly enough, but it's an accomplishment nonetheless. It's another example of this program moving in the right direction.
- This team will need to follow the Washington model if we're going to compete for a National Championship. Elite offense with a good enough defense. Hopefully, unlike Washington, the end result is different.
- Another loss for the Mario haters. For a guy who supposedly kills QB careers, corches away games, and can't put together a high octane offense, he sure is disappointing the haters.
- James Franklin pulls another James Franklin in Happy Valley. Penn State blows it in a 13-20 loss. To have an idea of how good but never good enough Franklin is as an HC, look at the record: 1-7 vs top 10 teams at home; 6-10 vs ranked teams at home; 1-9 vs top 10 teams; 1-10 vs OSU. Luckily for Franklin, there is a clear path for his PSU team to make the CFP. Unfortunately for him, there's no proof that he can win in the CFP. Penn State had two drives to the OSU 5yd line with 0 points. As bad as Miami has been, imagine being stuck in the purgatory that is PSU football. Again, good, but never good enough.
- As of the writing of this post, UGA is ****ting the bed against UF. Only 10-3, but Carson Beck has 2 ints and looks terrible.
- The woes continue for FSU. Getting beat by a bad UNC team. Only 14-3 at half, but you already know that FSU is out of it. It's mind blowing that this is Year 5 of the Norvell regime. I genuinely don't know how he fixes this. He's gonna have to go all out on the portal again, which created this nightmare to begin with. Imo he'll be out at FSU by the end of the 26' season.
- Oregon handling Michigan easily, at the writing of this post. It's an interesting Oregon team to watch. Good, but beatable imo.
- OSU wins another close one. Again, like Oregon, good but beatable. A team that doesn't really have an identity. Good at everything, but not elite at anything. Thank god we ended up with Cam and not Will Howard. Will Howard isn't even on the same planet as Cam.
- The story of CFB this year is that not team looks unbeatable. There isn't a juggernaut that's eating through its schedule. Everyone's got a weakness that can be exploited. This gives us, or any top team, a shot.
- Mopes GET ****ED. Y'all really thought this would be the week. I saw you come out of the woodwork in the gameday discussion. Talking about how we're not a good team, talking about Mario corching it up, and a bunch of other bull****. Back to the mope corner for another week.
