Pete mentioned something on the last podcast about Manny going more to a 4-2-5 D with all the DB's and mega-athletes we are about to sign. Don't know about you guys but IMO, that would be perfect. With all the speed we have in SoFla? It would be kind of like what JJ would do. You can get a guy bigger, but not always faster. Sometimes he would make a big safety a LB and take a LB or TE and make them a DE..and take a DE and make them a DT. Manny and Mark seem to be doing the same thing. Bethel is an example, DE to DT...so is Redwine CB moved to Safety. More speed. And you know what they say...SPEED KILLS. Our speed on D in the coming years is going to be very scary.

Been discussed ad nauseum.
Thanks for the history lesson. None of us knew any of that.

Just out of curiosity, when people talk about the 4-2-5, is the 5th person typically a nickel type like Bandy or a rover/viper type like Carter?

TYPICALLY...A carter type. It's not your basic nickel (Bandy), more a rover/viper. But obv we use variations Bandy ('16 J.Johnson), Carter, Perry

Johnson actually described his 4-3 attacking defense as basically a five LB defense. His DE's didn't drop into coverage, but they were fast like LBs who could rush the passer and disrupt. Manny does pretty much the same. JJ said that if he had been the coach he never would have switched Alonzo Highsmith to RB but kept him at DE to rush the passer along with Danny Stubbs. He said that would have been an unbelievable disruptive defense.

The issue with it being Carter if he's lined up in coverage is what happened against Clemson - Carter and Smith often lined up on the slot WR.
