Miami Palmetto 3-star DB Cornelius Nunn is a Syracuse commit, but ended up showing up to Paradise Camp on campus in Coral Gables two weekends back. Nunn was actually one of the few top 2019 targets to actually compete at the event, as many that were there sat out and Nunn showed out at the event as one of the top DB’s in attendance. He enjoyed the time on campus to continue to build his relationships around the program at Miami and to also improve his game.
“It was pretty good, it was better than all the other camps I had went to,” Nunn said on Paradise. “You know, it’s Miami, speed and all that. Stuff that I like.”
Nunn spent most of his time at camp working with UM safeties coach Ephraim Banda, but also got some time at corner as well. The Palmetto star elaborated on what it’s like being taught by a guy like Banda.
“Enthusiasm! All the fire he brings. He’s a pretty good coach, he coaches the best of the best like Jaquan Johnson and those guys,” Nunn said. “Learned a lot from him, how to play corner, things I’ve never done before.”
For Nunn, the appeal of the UM program is more than just the tradition and history. Seeing his older peers come through the Miami program and creating the blueprint for the path to success has inspired Nunn.
“I’m close with Jaquan Johnson and Sheldrick Redwine, I grew up watching those guys play,” Nunn said. “I’ve been watching them since Richmond Giants. I played for the Richmond Giants too. I’m close with DJ Ivey & Gilbert Frierson too, playing against those guys in high school and growing up with them.”
In the past, contact with UM was few and far between despite his offer, but just before Paradise and in the time since, Nunn reports that Miami has been pushing for him to flip from Syracuse.
“I would say they are coming pretty strong,” Nunn said on Miami. “They’re looking at me kind of like as a rover, come down in the box to move around the field, go from slot to slot. They mentioned the striker position too, some special teams too with my speed.”
Does Nunn have a preference on where exactly he plays?
“It don’t matter, wherever you put me I’m going to make plays,” Nunn said. “I’m a playmaker”
Despite Miami coming after him hard lately, Nunn maintains that he is still committed to Syracuse.
“You know, it’s pretty strong,” Nunn said on his ‘Cuse commitment. “Me and coach Munroe get along, we got a pretty good bond. I like it up there, it’s pretty fun.”
The 6’0” 175 pounder will use this upcoming college season to help him see some more campuses and make sure that Syracuse is really the place for him.
“I will be taking some visits during the season,” Nunn said. “Probably catch the Alabama vs Auburn game, might go back to Syracuse and visit there and see how it is. I will definitely be taking an official to Miami, oh yes, no doubt. Probably for the FSU game.”
As a rising senior, Nunn knows this is his last chance to win a state title with all the teammates he grew up playing with. In 2018, going out on top is the goal, but that’s not to say Nunn doesn’t have personal goals as well.
“My expectations are game by game, one game at a time. Get better by one game at a time, try to go to States and win a State Championship,” Nunn said. “I want 6 interceptions and 80 tackles, last year I had 3 interceptions and 60 tackles. I’m trying to go big this year.”
There’s a few other prospects on the roster at Miami Palmetto that Nunn feels are underrated and deserving of college attention.
“I would have to say Eddie Williams,” Nunn said. “The kid is a beast, like he can go from safety to linebacker to anything. He’s always around the ball, always flying to the ball. A guy like Brashard Smith too at running back, he’s gonna be a sophomore this year. I know he’s young but he’s got talent.”
