2nd half performances

After 11 games, this isn’t coincidental. For whatever reason, the 2024 Miami Hurricanes have become one of the most prolific 2nd half offenses in the last two decades.

For the season, Miami is now averaging 24.4 points per game in the second half of games. That is FAR AND AWAY #1 in the country. Take this for perspective:

Miami is #1 at 24.4 PPG
Iowa State is #2 at 19.0 PPG

That’s a 5.4 point difference. So the difference between 1 and 2, 5.4 PPG, is the same difference as #2 and NUMBER 57. Which is Mississippi State, averaging 13.6 per.

That is insane. Truly. I went back for the last 20 years, and this is the biggest disparity between #1 and #2 since 2012. That year, Louisiana Tech averaged 26.4 in the 2nd half, and #2 was Arizona at 20.9.

So, I’m sure we’d all rather we score 24+ in every first half, and not have to sweat quite as much. But good lord this team just comes at you for 60 minutes and does not relent in the least bit. Everyone deserves credit here, imo. In order to do this, you need to be well conditioned, tough, physical, and really smart to make good halftime adjustments, and you need really good players to execute.

I’ve posted a few comments about our 4th quarter offense and just updated my spreadsheet, and feels like this is a good thread to drop this.

In 4th quarters of conference games, excluding drives where we ran out the clock for a win, we’ve had 21 offensive drives. Of those 21, we have:

16 Touchdowns (Scoring a touchdown on over 76% of our drives. That’s…. Insane)
1 INT
2 Fumbles lost
1 TO on downs
1 Punt

We’re averaging more than 2 touchdowns a game in the fourth quarter of conference games.

We’ve run 125 offensive plays, and gained 1,137 yards. That’s an average of 9.1 yards per play. Again. Insane.

Unfortunately, 2 of the 5 drives we haven’t scored on came in the GT game (downs and the fumble), but regardless the offense continues to be blistering in the 4th quarter.

I’m going to dig more into passing/rushing splits. But we need to appreciate just how absurd this offense has been when it has been needed most. Like you said, some first half consistency would be great. But **** it’s great to always feel like you’re about to run away from teams.

If we could make better decisions we would not have to play so well in the 4th. We would be in control throughout.

Less penalties. Less careless turnovers. Settling for FGs instead of going for it so much (Screww analytics, we have one of the best Kickers in the game.)

This is the takeaway for you? OP lays out how historically awesome we’ve been and your initial impulse is to mope?

It is not the take away. I love our offense and I respect the numbers and the greatness in the second half.
I am far from a moper. Most people say that I always wear Canes colored glasses.

That said, I just know that this team can play better throughout the whole entire game. And I also know that the coaching staff should sometimes put the kicker out there and get points. We do that against the Jackets and I think we would have had a chance at being undefeated.

We do it in the future games and we can win out.

I was re-watching the condensed version and couldnt believe how fast we had scored 3 TDs in that 4th quarter. I had totally forgotten. Being a quick strike offense will absolulely help us moving forward as well. We score in bunches once we have our foot on your neck.

It also made me think about how insanely lethal this offense and team would be if we could force more turnovers or flip the field with special teams. When you give this offense a short field, it’s a wrap for your defense. We just do it far too infrequently.

Look what happened last week and against Duke. It’s just an avalanche if we can get a turnover and/or a short field.

The 2nd quarter is what’s doing it to us

If we were even playing decent in the 2nd quarter we would be boatracing pretty much everyone

But we hate doing things the easy way

Being outscored 82-51 since the USF game and it’s absurd because on offense we start off on fire every week
