I’m a big believer in looking back before you look forward. There’s a lot of debates about how to use the portal “best” and I think it fluctuates. I’ve been highly critical of Portal Rankings but I found this interesting

Out of the top 10 team rankings only 3 teams made the playoff. They were also the 3 of the top 4 ranked teams BY RECRUIT (Bama just missed out obviously)

They were also the 3 teams that took the FEWEST transfers

For informational purposes really. Just confirms what we already knew:

1. Have a good team
2. Use the portal to plug holes (pause) with high quality players

I don’t like portal rankings. They’re still heavily weighted with high school and don’t do a good enough job of total evaluation.

This year they seem to be getting slightly better, but still very far from perfect. It’s a relatively new thing in college football, so I understand working through kinks the first 5-6 years.

With that said, Ole Miss successfully addressed defensive issues in the portal + Tre Harris. Oregon got a ton of defensive pieces, Evan Stewart and Gabriel. A&M and Texas got key defensive pieces as well + Matthew Golden for the Longhorns. Florida and Colorado got some decent guys and saw improvements, as did we. Who knows where we’re at without Cam Ward, Martinez, Barrow.

FSU is just a whiff, Bama was meh too.

Rankings definitely aren’t end all be all, and I much prefer the HS stars to portal stars; but all of that top 5 was in the playoff discussion down to the last week, as were Colorado and Miami. So in essence, it still does matter. 8 of those 10 were fringe or actual playoff teams in 2024.

The two that weren’t: UF and FSU.

That first paragraph is what I’ve been saying since day 1

Still interesting how it played out

No pause.
Personally, I’m more of a gap filler. 😎
