2022 Cocoa (FL) 3-star ATH OJ Ross earned an offer from the Miami Hurricanes earlier this year, something he saw as his first big in-state offer.
“I was excited because I know Miami is a big school,” Ross said. “It’s in Florida, it’s close to home.”
At Cocoa, Ross is utilized as a versatile athlete all over the field, but says the Canes have already indicated where they see him ending up at the next level.
“They’re recruiting me on the offensive side,” Ross said of UM. “I get recruited on both sides - I play running back, slot receiver, and corner. Every time I step on the field, I’m trying to kill my opponent.”
Quicker, shiftier talents that can work from both the backfield and the slot is something that Miami OC Rhett Lashlee places a lot of value on, and Ross also sees a good fit in UM’s new offense.
“I’ve heard about their spread offense and I like the way they run their offense, that’s what we run at my high school now. So, I think I’d be a good fit for their program,” Ross said of Miami.
Ross has already received 14 total offers, with bids coming from Tennessee, Kentucky, Pitt, West Virginia, and Washington State among others. Of the bunch, the Cocoa star says he’s keeping things even at the moment and has no favorites.
“As of right now, all 14 are standing out to me, but I can see it getting bigger,” Ross said of his recruitment. “But right now, I’m focused on my actual football season and school. Hopefully more offers come, I’m being patient. I’m just waiting on the season to come and then I’m going to go from there. My mind could change, but I’ll say I’ll cut down my list sometime during my senior year.”
In the past, Ross previously took visits to UCF, Maryland, and Florida, and he spoke on what he liked about seeing the program up in Gainesville.
“I feel like Florida is a nice school, they were showing me their campus, their locker rooms, their fields,” Ross said. “It’s in Florida, it’s close to home and my family.”
As a sophomore in 2019, Ross was productive for the Tigers, posting 35 catches for 457 yards and 3 TD’s, 115 yards rushing with 2 TD’s on the ground, with 7 tackles, 2 PBU, and an INT on defense.
“First off, somewhere I can go and play my first year. I want to go somewhere that makes me feel like I’m home that also has a good coaching staff of course. A good school in academics too, a school that’s good in what I want to major in.”
Three weeks back, Ross competed in the Elite Underclassman Showcase in Jacksonville held by Under Armour, one of the first major events since the coronavirus pandemic hit.
“That camp went well. A reporter that was there posted on Twitter that I was one of the top running backs out there, so I feel like I proved myself.”
