While the Miami Hurricanes have been busy trying to wrap up their 2020 class, that hasn’t stopped the coaching staff from looking ahead with an eye on 2021. After cornerbacks coach Mike Rumph evaluated his film 2 weeks back, 2021 University School (FL) DB Ricardo Hallman landed a Miami offer, something he says he’s been waiting for.
“I have been waiting on this. Coach Rumph came to the school and my coach told me they watched film on me,” Hallman said. “I was able to get coach Rumph’s number through my coach and we had a couple conversations. He told me to call him while I was on my way back from a workout and he just told me I had the offer.”
How did it feel getting an offer from a school he’s always admired?
“It feels great. I grew up a big fan of the U, that’s all I used to watch on TV,” Hallman said. “I’m still a big fan, so an offer from them was really big for me. I’m definitely going to try to set up a visit soon, it would be after their bowl game.”
Another aspect in UM’s favor here? The fact that Hallman is cousins with Miami redshirt freshman striker Gilbert Frierson.
“Gilbert hit me up and he told me congratulations,” Hallman said. “He said ‘We want to see you here’. He was telling me Miami would be a good spot for me and I’d love it here.”
Hallman is listed as an athlete by some recruiting services, but he mostly focused on playing cornerback for U-School this season, and that is the position UM is recruiting him at as well.
“My film is mostly all for corner, so coach Rumph told me I’d fit in as a corner and he said I’d be a great corner for the Hurricanes,” Hallman said.
Growing up a fan of the Canes has made Hallman well-versed in UM football history, and the type of bravado that came with being a Hurricane is something that attracts him to the program.
“Going back to the old days, with Miami being DBU, they had so many great players coming out like Sean Taylor, Ed Reed, Antrelle Rolle, all the big-time secondary players,” Hallman said. “I like the toughness Miami brings, the swagger that comes with being a Cane, I love everything about it.”
The 6-0 185 pound prospect says he watched all of Miami’s games this season and Hallman gave his take on the 6-6 regular season that Manny Diaz delivered in his first year as head coach.
“This year was Manny’s first year, and they had some good moments, but they had too many bad moments. But that’s going to happen with any team,” Hallman said. “I feel like especially with the recruiting class they’re getting, it’s a really bright future for them and I really expect the Canes to be good in the future.”
Elsewhere in this recruitment, the Michigan Wolverines have been coming after Hallman since the summer and the U-School star lists them his co-leader along with Miami. Baylor and Boston College are other Power 5 programs that have offered Hallman as of now.
“I talk to the University of Michigan a lot. They’ve definitely been the team I’ve been most in touch with aside from Miami,” Hallman said. “Probably right now it’s a tie between Michigan and Miami, but I think once I get a chance to see Miami, the campus, be around the football area, I think that would probably change.”
It looks like a decision might not be too far off for Hallman, but he has no set timetable in mind currently.
“I haven’t given much though to it yet. I know I’d want to commit sooner rather than later, but I’m not sure of a time yet,” he said.
During his junior season, Hallman helped University School to an 8-3 record, but the Sharks fell in the playoffs to Cardinal Gibbons, 35-17. Hallman certainly did his part make the 2019 season a success, landing on first team all-county after recording 8 interceptions, 20 solo tackles, and 5 PBU’s on the year.
