When 2017 Miami Central (Fla.) linebacker Waynmon Steed committed to the Hurricanes, it wasn’t a very hard decision to make. The opportunity to represent his hometown was too much to pass on.
“It’s home, I stay in Miami, I’m from Miami. You gotta represent ‘the 305’ , that’s all.”
Steed is very interested in Hurricanes linebacker coach Hurlie Brown’s practice methods and likes the way he coaches with high intensity and passion.
“I like him because he shows intensity and he loves the things that he does. He teaches a lot and he shows motivation.”
Steed is participating with the South Florida Express and got the chance to bond with some other Hurricane commits on the team. Steed is very excited not only to play with them, but the prospect of playing together at the next level.
“We talk about everything, we’re brothers and it’s all love playing with those guys. It’s very exciting with all this talent we have coming in.”
Steed got an opportunity to visit Coral Gables last week and enjoyed himself while watching the team practice. Steed says he’s noticed daily improvement from the Hurricanes during their practice.
“It was fun, I got to talk to the coaches and watch them practice. They’re getting better and better everyday,” said Steed. “I like that they’re becoming a better team and the DB’s are up front and the whole defense is playing well.”
The 6’1 206 pound linebacker is hearing from Miami and South Carolina at the moment. While the Gamecocks are speaking with Steed, he assures he’s committed to Miami.
“I’m committed to Miami, Miami is where my heads at right now.”
The Miami Central Rockets are coming off another state championship and Steed is well aware that the goal is to return once again.
“We got a big role this year, we have to fill in for every empty spot we lost. Da’Vante (Phillips) left, but we have to replace it and keep the motor going.”
The Rockets defense was considered one of the best in the state last year and Steed expects nothing less than the same heading into the offseason.
“We have a big defensive line coming in, Me and Donovan Thompson are a really big duo. We have Jamel Cook at safety, We just have to keep working, that’s the biggest thing.”
