2015 St. Thomas Aquinas WR Devante Peete is not new to the 7-on-7 game in South Florida, as he has been on the scene as a prospect since his freshman year. Saturday at the South Florida Express tryout was just another example of why Peete will be such a highly sought-after prospect.
“I came out here my freshman year and didn’t know anything about it, but there were a lot of athletes and it’s a place where you can make a name for yourself and learn a lot from former NFL players that are coaching out here,” said Peete.
Peete was often matched up with his elite defensive back counterparts in one-on-ones, so who stood out to him?
“I want to say Tarvarus McFadden from American Heritage because he’s real nice. He just needs to get a little more physical. Me and Tyrek Cole from Miramar battle every year too.”
The 6-5, 200-pound freak took the next step this season in a crowded Aquinas receivers group. Peete averaged 22.8 yards per reception and scored 5 times.
“It was just a lot of hard work and not taking any handouts. I would be out there early morning and at night sessions by myself getting in that hard work and it paid off.”
Peete holds offers from nearly every top program in the country, but he is trying to take the recruiting process slowly.
“As of right now, everybody is on the same line. I’m trying to lead my time to a state championship.”
A school that offered Peete back during the summer is the University of Miami.
“I like Miami a lot because I’ve had a relationship with them since my freshman year. They have a great coaching staff and great players and everybody welcomes me and wants me to be there. I just love the atmosphere at Miami right now.”
The former Ely wide-out is optimistic about Miami’s program moving forward.
“I just feel like once everything comes together for them, they will go far. With the 2014 recruiting class they are bringing in, hopefully everything comes together because those guys gotta get it.”
It will not be an easy pull for Miami, as Peete says that Ohio State, Alabama, Clemson, and Florida State are the other programs recruiting him hard right now.
