The Miami Central (Fla.) Rockets are coming off their second state championship and as always are looking to reload for next year already. 2015 defensive end Fermin Silva is one of the many senior leaders who is looking to contribute the same amount or even more effort to get back there again.
“It feels really good knowing that I’ve been to states all of my football years. It feels very great because all the hard work paid off. I’m working hard everyday and keeping the kids focused. This is going to be a big year because not only is it my last year, but people think that just because Joe (Yearby) and Dalvin (Cook) are gone that we aren’t gonna go back, but we have a lot to prove as a team.”
Silva played a very prominent role in the Rockets defense this past season as he contributed to their ferocious pass rush and he thanks the coaches for calling on him early.
“It meant to me that the coaches believed in me and they trusted me to do it and they needed me to help my team and put my team on my back. We needed it when Joe (Yearby) went down and I put it on my back to help my team.”
Recruiting wise, Silva is still getting exposure and looking to hear from more schools.
“Schools that are in contact with me are UM,USF and Appalachian State offered me. I talk to UM, FSU, Alabama, Louisville, Michigan and Purdue. Those are all the schools are interested.”
The South Florida Bulls are an intriguing school for Silva because of the familiarity with his former head coach Telly Lockette who is the running backs coach there.
“With USF, there’s a lot of players there that I played with so it would feel like home and I have coach (Telly) Lockette there and he was like a dad to me so that wouldn’t be a problem at all since I know he would be there for me.”
The hometown Miami Hurricanes are in contact with the 6’1 215 pound rush end prospect and he made it clear where he stands with them.
“I’m just waiting for the offer and all the coaches know me and they talk about me in the meetings. I’m just waiting for the offer right now.”
The Miami Central product does admit the ‘Canes would sit in a good position if they were to offer.
“They would be tied for first. It’s home it feels like home, the chance to play with Joe (Yearby) and Trevor (Darling) it would be amazing. The coaches love me a lot and I like them too and they push you with school work which I like a lot. The history also, I looked up to a lot of players that came from there.”
While Silva is still waiting for an offer from Miami, he does admit they are recruiting him aggressively.
“They send me mail every day and I talk to coach Hurlie (Brown) about every 2 weeks or I’ll go to a basketball game and talk to them. It’s probably a 9 of how hard they’re recruiting me.”
