Alright, 37 days left and counting, I've got a little time this weekend, so time for another opinion...

Last year ended up being an emotional let down, but as we all know, it could have easily been a 7-5/6 season instead of a 9-4 one with those close wins over WF, UNC. To summarize, we obviously all know the horrid defense we had last year, but with all the fears we have this year at QB, really, were we that great at QB last year? It was certainly not a position of strength. Morris only completed 57% of his passes last year with his 3rd down completion horribly lower. When Duke Johnson went down it really was over offensively. Dallas only averaged 3 ypc not counting the Duke game!

So will we be improved in 2014? Why not? Defensively, we gotta believe the defense will be improved. More upperclassmen starting and a bigger, stronger DL. Offensively, QB is our main concern. But really, lets say that we only get 60% completion from QB, if our 3rd down completion rate is improved, this position is already better!

I don't know if Heaps will legitimately be great, or if Williams comes back soon, but if those two complete passes at a high percentage, then this offense will be very strong and successful. It will always have banked on our RBs and a dominating Duke with great supporting cast of Gus and Yearby make this group the most talented we've had here in a decade. Our WR's and TE's are our great strengths, so just having a poised QB to distribute the ball and not turn it over. I really see the TE's FINALLY playing a bigger role in this offense, mainly in the 5-15 yard range to create that security blanket for the QB's. I believe these guys can maintain a ~35 ppg average. Last year we averaged 31 ppg.

Offensively, I can see the following happening:

Heaps/Williams/Olsen (maybe) - 60% completion 3100 yds 27 TD's 12 int

Duke Johnson 240 carries 1500 yds 13 TD's

Stacey Coley 60 catches 1000 yds (lots of YAC) 10 TD's

Phil Dorsett 45 catches 850 yds 6 TD's

Special Teams Punt/Kickoff Returns 6 TD's

Defensively, I can see us improving as follows:

Team sacks: 32.0 (3 sack improvement over last year)
Team Int's: 19 Int's (1 INT improvement and more coming from DB's)

Big question, are we a Top 30 defense again???

Alright, time to take off those orange & green glasses now. Go Ganes! :neonu:

Last year Williams had a .10 per cent better completion average than Morris---so the qb question may be looking better..According to summer practice sessions he's looking to be back as the starter...

Offensively, if we can get our TOP average from 25 mins (woefully bad) to 32 mins, that would actually solve a lot of defensive problems.

Defensively, you're saying we had 29 sacks last year. I think to be an effective unit, we would have to hit at least somewhere around 36.

I'd like to see INT rise to about 22.

How many yards allowed will we improve to? 490?

How many 3 and outs for our offense last year?

Agreed... If TOP improves the defense will get better.

We allowed 430 ypg. If we cut that by 70 ypg to 360, we are now a top 30 defense, based on stats from last year.

Seriously, I know its a sore subject, but like others have said, if we can keep the ball longer and balance out that TOP, and improve the DL play, things change dramatically.

Time of possesion killed us last year. It's no coincidence that 8 out of the top 10 defenses in ypg were top 25 in time of possesion.

I agree our D sux, but with TOP that can't hurt us it can help the D. I thought they were on the field way too much.

Yep, an improvement in TOP alone will help the defense a lot.

You will recall in the bowl game our D was actually playing relatively well to start but the offense repeatedly going 3 and out allowed UL to wear them down big time and the dam exploded.

Miami was I think 4th from the worst in the entire country in TOP at 26 mins. The best was around 34 and the elite tier was 32.

We need to get it up to 32. A heavy dose of Duke and Gus, a lot of short high percentage passes designed just to move the chains and then making big plays in the pass game off PA once the run has been established. In other words, an offense tailor made for Ryan Williams, if he can recover in time.

If you take the D off the field for an extra six minutes a game, that's definitely worth probably at least 50 yards of total defense and probably 5 points, irrespective of actual defensive improvement. If the upgrade in run D with Wyche and Heurtelou and upgrade in pass rush with a better McCord and Muhammad with maybe some help from youngsters like Thomas etc, that's probably worth another 20-30 yards over the course of a game.

So as FIU mentioned it's not hard at all to see how Miami can shave almost 100 yards of total defense off its game averages. I expect Miami to be around 350 yards per game in total defense between all these factors.
