While I have no idea how we will do in the bowl game or what coaches will be somewhere else, here are the last three years in a nut shell (now that the bowl games are set up). I also did a comparison at the bottom.

I think the best way to compare everything is to remove as many variables as possible (i.e. the OOC Schedule) and compare the last few seasons during ACC play. Remove as many variables as possible and see what happens...(modified old post I had below the line)

(Remember this just for the ACC and not OOC)

In terms of most difficult schedule: 2013 was by the most difficult as our opponents had a winning % of .5714 OOC and .5156 in conference. 2012 was .5102 OOC and .4843 in conference. 2011 was .5257 in conference and .4687.

When you compare 2012 and 2013 (Since we had a 5-3 record both seasons)

2013: 262 Points Allowed or 32.75 PPG
2013: 215 Points Scored or 26.875 PPG
2013: Turnovers Margin -1

2012: 252 Points Allowed or 31.75 PPG
2012: 263 Points Scored or 32.875 PPG
2012: Turnovers Margin + 7

The defense sucked in both years but was similar (in terms of performance), this terrible defense was pretty much a constant. On offense, we're scoring 6 less points per game. In addition, in 2012 our turnover margin during ACC play was + 7 as opposed to -1 this year (i.e. More turnovers during ACC play).

You combine the above with an injury to Duke Johnson (4 Games) and you have our 2013 season.

Crappy Defense (again) + More Turnovers (less scoring) - Duke Johnson = 5-3

Well, Al always says he want the players to be the same guy every day. His process appears to have work. They have achieved consistant performance on D at least - sucky. Offense need a little more coaching up, unless we throw 2012 out and assume new OC will sustain the 2013level of performance. Looks like we have arrived at the new normal. Sad bowl team that nobody will worry about -- or go to see.

a new defensive coordinator and dline coach can take the incoming talent and flip those defensive numbers.

now with a senior QB, veteran offensive line, and pretty decent TE and WR's the drop on that side of the ball is unforgivable. Morris should have sat three games after the injury and just taken the time the heal. It was needed and didn't happen. Our red-zone production wasn't worth a crap this season either. With gus and hagens, two bruisers, we should have been able to power into the end zone for a higher TD percentage but we go away from the run for some reason or start stretching the runs out. Coley needed to looks at what he had player wise and use the size advantage we had. Im not sold on him yet. He tries to get too cute at times and out thought himself. which forced us to do what we did in the NC game and just cram it down their throat(which we should have been doing a lot more).

I don't think that is true at all (the bold part). Let's assume the defense remains the same next year. Let's focus on the offense.

During ACC play in 2013 we turned the ball over an additional 6 times (almost twice per game). In addition, we lost Duke for 4 games in 2013. I think if you decrease the amount of turnovers and return a healthy Duke, you are getting a lot of those points back.

In addition, during the first four games our kicker went 4/7. The last four games he went 7/7. I am not asking our kicker to be perfect, just consistent. He kicks a 49 yard FG during the VT rain and then misses 3 from shorter distances (43, 40 and 44) during the first four games. If he hits those 3 FGs, we're averaging 1.125 more points in ACC play.

In 2011 the defense had, Spence, Forston, Vernon, Ray Ray, etc.....same scheme, and at MD they did not play and we got torched....so yes its coaching
