While I have no idea how we will do in the bowl game or what coaches will be somewhere else, here are the last three years in a nut shell (now that the bowl games are set up). I also did a comparison at the bottom.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
2013:Our ACC Schedule: GT, UNC, WF, FSU, VT, Duke, Pitt and UVA
Our Record: 5-3
SOS (i.e. our opponent’s W/L): 56-42 (33-31)
- 6 Opponents going to Bowl Games
262 Points Allowed or 32.75 PPG
215 Points Scored or 26.875 PPG
Special Teams and Defensive Scoring
- Coley Punt Return (Duke)
- Gunter Pick-6 (GT)
- Gunter FG Block TD (UNC)
- Howard Pick-6 (UVA)
- Gilbert Scoop and Score (UVA)
Turnovers Forced: 14
Turnovers Allowed: 15
12/9: Recruiting Ranking Per ESPN: #3 (15 4-Stars, 0 5-Stars, 13 ESPN 300 Commits)
2012 :Our ACC Schedule: BC, GT, NC St, UNC, FSU, VT, UVA and Duke
Our Record: 5-3
SOS: 50-48 (31-33) *This does not include a post-season record of 3-2*
- 6 Bowl Teams (I included UNC because they had enough wins)
252 Points Allowed or 31.75 PPG
- BC scored 2 points on a safety
263 Points Scored or 32.875 PPG
- Perryman Pick-6 (BC)
- Safety (GT)
- Safety (NC State)
- Safety (UVA)
- Duke KO Return (UVA)
Turnovers Forced: 16
Turnovers Allowed: 9
Recruiting Ranking Per ESPN: #15 (10 4-Stars, 0 5-Stars, 8 ESPN 300 Commits)
2011: Our ACC Schedule: Maryland, VT, UNC, GT, UVA, Duke, FSU and BC
Our Record: 3-5
SOS: 51-46 (30-34) *This does not include a post-season record of 1-4*
- 5 Bowl Teams
163 Points Allowed or 20.375 PPG
- Safety (Maryland)
- Fumble Return for TD but no EP (Maryland)
- Punt Return for TD (FSU)
- Pick-6 (BC)
219 Points Scored or 27.375 PPG
Turnovers Forced: 11
Turnovers Allowed: 11
Recruiting Ranking Per ESPN: #8 (8 4-Stars, 0 5-Stars, 7 ESPN 300 Commits)

I think the best way to compare everything is to remove as many variables as possible (i.e. the OOC Schedule) and compare the last few seasons during ACC play. Remove as many variables as possible and see what happens...(modified old post I had below the line)
(Remember this just for the ACC and not OOC)
In terms of most difficult schedule: 2013 was by the most difficult as our opponents had a winning % of .5714 OOC and .5156 in conference. 2012 was .5102 OOC and .4843 in conference. 2011 was .5257 in conference and .4687.
When you compare 2012 and 2013 (Since we had a 5-3 record both seasons)
2013: 262 Points Allowed or 32.75 PPG
2013: 215 Points Scored or 26.875 PPG
2013: Turnovers Margin -1
2012: 252 Points Allowed or 31.75 PPG
2012: 263 Points Scored or 32.875 PPG
2012: Turnovers Margin + 7
The defense sucked in both years but was similar (in terms of performance), this terrible defense was pretty much a constant. On offense, we're scoring 6 less points per game. In addition, in 2012 our turnover margin during ACC play was + 7 as opposed to -1 this year (i.e. More turnovers during ACC play).
You combine the above with an injury to Duke Johnson (4 Games) and you have our 2013 season.
Crappy Defense (again) + More Turnovers (less scoring) - Duke Johnson = 5-3
