Florida Atlantic Owls
2012 Record: 3-9
Coaching: It was former Nebraska defensive coordinator Carl Pelini's first season as the FAU head coach. He has a vision for the Owls to be more aggressive on defense and recruit well in the talent rich state of Florida. The team went 3-9 last season and did not fare how coach Pelini envisioned when he took on the head coaching job. The team has now moved up to the C-USA which coach Pelini believes a tougher conference will lead to better competition and more recruits.
2013 Position Breakdown
QB: The Owls took a loss at the quarterback position losing senior Quarterback Graham Wilbert to graduation. Wilbert completed over 64% of his passes for over 2800 yards, with an 18:6 TD-INT ratio. All is not lost as the Owls have a promising dual-threat QB in senior JUCO transfer Melvin German III and early enrollee freshman QB Quez Johnso. Most expect German to win the job. German also had the best showing at the FAU spring game earlier this year.
RB: The Owls are in great shape here. They have a senior quartet of rushers led by Jonathan Wallace (648 yards), Damian Fortner (313 yards), Martese Jackson (224 yards) and Travis Jones. They will be fine in the running game if the OL can open up holes for them, and that is a big if.
WR: While QB and OL are big question marks for the owls. The offensive skill positions at RB,WR, and TE are not suspect. Junior WR William Dukes (63 receptions for 979 yards) leads the Owls in receptions and yards. Seniors Daniel McKinney (48 receptions for 492 yards) and Deandre Richardson; the latter led the OWLS in receptions in 2011 after missing all of the 2012 season due to injury.
TE: The owls return a decent receiving TE in senior Nexon Dorvilus. He's tall and is the teams big red zone threat.
OL: OL and DL are the weakest positions on the team. The Owls return two starting OL. Lucky they recieved two transfers that they expect to start immediately.
DL: The Owls will start 225 pound sophomore Trevon Coley (39 tackles) and senior Brandin Bryant (31 tackles, 4.5 for loss) at defensive tackle. Derek Booker and Kayvon Sherill will also be in the mix at DT. At defensive end seniors Martin Wright (28 tackles, 4.0 for loss), Cory Henry (24 tackles) and Andrew Stryffeler will play the majority of the snaps this fall.
LB: David Hinds is gone but LB is still a strength. The secondary is also in good shape. There is some competition for the SS spot. LBs Andrae Kirk (70 tackles), Randell Johnson (21 tackles) and Adarius Glanton (75 tackles, 5.5 for loss) will lead the way for FAU with Kirk being the key man to watch.
DB: Keith Reaser is the lockdown defender to watch for the owls. He will be competing for first team all conference at the corner position. Across from the Reaser the Owls return another starter in junior CB D'Journ Smith. FAU also has an experienced nickel back in Cre'Von LeBlan (42 tackles).
How FAU maches up with Miami:
Losing an efficient starter at QB is never an easy replacement. Having one of the worst offensive lines in college football doesn't help much either. The Miami defense will have a field day getting after the offense forcing multiple turnovers. I believe the Miami defense will force 3 turnovers this gane. Offensively believe we won't throw the ball much. FAU has some solid DBs. But when they start that 225lb DT against our OL please believe Miami will run at that kid all day.
Offensive Stat prediction:
Morris: 220-250 passing yards.
Duke 135-150 yards.
Crawford over 100 total yards. 50+ rushing and 50+ receiving.
No WRs over 100 yards.( Spreading the ball around.)
Defensive Stat prediction 3+ turnovers. 3-5 sacks.
Final score Miami 38 - FAU 10.
Florida Gators coming tomorrow.
