Coach D’Onofrio Defense Game By Bame Review.
I will start that I’ve attacked D’Onofrio nonstop about the defense during the regular season. I was calling for his name and part of me still wants too. But after re-watching the games from last season, I will take back my harsh statements until after the 2013 season, when I can properly evaluate Coach D. Re-watching these games I truly believe that our defense was that bad because of the inexperience on the field. Many games the secondary had blown coverage or the linebackers missed tackles. I’m getting excited for the season and will now take the optimistic approach to our defense for the 2013 season. I believe we will have less blown assignments. Now the plays that are just bad calls are just that, bad play calls. But there are MANY plays where our guys are in perfect position and just mess it up.
Just so this is put out now. I do NOT expect the D to make every play in every game. Even the elite teams don’t make every play. But if we had made even 50% of these we wouldn’t be talking about our defense in the same light as we do now. Our numbers would’ve have been drastically better and we might have won two or three more games. (UVA,FSU,UNC)
Here we go:
Boston College:
First Quarter
15:00 - This was just a bad call as no one contained the flats if it was zone. No one stayed with the fullback #41 if it was man coverage. Even worse was #22 Kacy Rodgers being dragged for an extra 5-10 yards upon contact with the FB.
14:37 - Thomas Finnie did what he was supposed to do even though he was playing 7-8 yards off the ball.
14:07 - Terrible play call. Perryman had two blockers and there is nothing he could do there. Maybe he could’ve shed the block but it’s tough on those double teams. Even then the other linebacker, I couldn’t make out the number 40-something, recognized it and dove at the RB’s feet missing the tackle. Instead of a five yard gain it’s a first down.
13:36 - Good job getting the hands up from the DE at the bottom of the screen and knocking that ball down. (My YouTube quality on this PC is horrible. So I don’t want to call the wrong players out. )
13:32 – LB’s let the WR #7 get behind them. It should have been completed to #7. Nothing you can do about that tipped ball to #83. Every LB knows not to get too deep but don’t be too close to the line after you make your read. Not a bad call. LB’s just were not thinking.
13:04 - #92 should have made that play all day no reason for the RB to gain 5 yards. It should have been a one yard gain. Again not a bad call #92 is right there.
12:32 – This was unacceptable. We let the RB walk into the end zone without being touched. Where were the LB’s? Why did #21 slip and fall instead of making that tackle for a loss? #45 has to shed that block and make that play or at least force it back outside where #21 was waiting. But still bad play call and alignment.
11:12 – Was all kinds of bad. That alignment against that play was screwed from the get go. Nothing the players could have done. BLOWN COVERAGE.
11:03 - #91 has to make that play in the backfield. He was there. But still a good play by #21 to have only a two yard gain. I’ll take only two yards every down.
10:26 – Everyone did their job it was just a terrible play call. That we had two guys in a zone where they had 3 WR. It was a mismatch and it got exploited.
09:59 – Great play by young #3, he wasn’t having any of that.
09:54 – They a picture perfect screen here. I have never seen OL hold the blocks that long on a screen. So the DL obviously got fooled.
09:17 – Great play by #71. He read his keys and made the play on the ball.
08:59 - #94 did a great job and the backside did a great job keeping contain. That should happen every time.
08:30 – BLOWN COVERAGE.
08:02 – On this play action play, who is #45 looking at? #52 had the RB. This is one of the key things that cannot happen anymore for us to move ahead. Even so #21 needed to bring him down at the 5, or at least hold him up until help arrived, instead of letting the big man get that TD.
06:01 - Great play by #44. He just blew that screen all the way up.
05:33 – Snapped the ball before our guys were ready. That is just being a young defense. But with that being said #59 over pursued/committed to the RB and had a terrible angle. So instead of a one yard gain it became a 5 yard gain. That can’t happen. Even #31 didn’t finish the tackle. He made the first hit but didn’t finish the tackle for a two yard gain.
04:50 – This was a great play call even if the receiver makes the catch #31 is right there and it would not have been a 1st down. That’s what we need.
00:45 - #7 needs to get a hand in there or knock that boy silly. No excuse look at the position he was in. Most safeties would salivate for an opportunity like that. That’s your chance for the kill shot man!!!
00:09 – Great Read by #52 on this pick. That was great. Need more of that.
2ND Quarter
15:00 – I could get mad but this was a good play a two yard gain by the QB.
14:53 - #52 and #45 got blocked and the back picked up a first down.
14:21 – Where is the DL pressure? Any QB with that much time is going to complete that pass. Rettig had been getting the ball out fairly quickly. #17 I saw what he was trying to do but he has to use his hands more in this situation.
13:49 – Backpedaling too far. Can’t tell if #7 or #2.
13:07 - #52 and #34 lost the receiver. We sent five players on this play. No excuse. Once again #7 had the opportunity for a kill shot.
12:44 - #52 GREAT SHED and tackle. That’s what you should’ve been doing earlier on the ones I called you out for. Way to go here!!!!
12:16 - #45 needed to make the play two yards before he did. But still a decent job.
11:33 – Fumbled the snap good job by everyone here. No one let the fumble and recover for like 5-10 yards so I’m happy there.
08:55 – We have two guys on the ground. #92 and #21. The worst part is that #91 has to make that play at the line of scrimmage he had the RB in one hand. Just let him go.
08:19 – On this play #92 has to make his tackle. I mean he was right there. No excuse.
07:55 – This was a bad play call. We had no one on their strong side in which is the direction they ran the football.
07:33 – It’s 1st and 20 why are we blitzing? We have six guys going to the QB here. Terrible play call. Glad the receiver dropped the ball.
07:30 - #59 cannot dive at the feet of the RB. This isn’t a bad call as he was in position to make a play on the ball. This is bad execution.
06:45 – There was no pressure. Still had 3 Canes on the receiver that caught the ball. #21 should have picked this off.
06:20 - #59 great play here.
05:44 – Can’t even begin to explain here. Just a bad play call.
04:56 – That ball needed to be tipped. Why is it so wide open!!!!!! ??
04:26 – We had two guys back there that were not deep enough. We got lucky here.
04:21 - #71 had this play in the backfield. I don’t know what happened though. Either way good job by the other defenders by only allowing 2 yards.
03:44 - #71 Hit that QB!!!!!! But nah this was a good play. He hurried the QB into a bad throw.
01:08 – Good forced fumble here. Just have to recover those.
3rd Quarter
13:49 - #36 that was a failure. That’s him on that play all day long. Same goes for #45. But #36 beat his man off the ball. He was keeping outside contained. Great! But force that lineman inside so the RB doesn’t have that rush lane.
13:38 - #45 made did a great job here.
13:08 - #22 needed to come over way before that. That should be a pick to the house for #22.
12:40 - #45 needs to make that sack.
12:00 - #20 Great coverage.
11:52 - #31 What happened? You were right there man. Make him pay for that catch. Plus we had two guys Almost sack the QB but almost isn’t good enough.
11:28 - #45 took a terrible angle what should’ve been a 9 yard loss turned into a 5-7 yard gain. Why did he not force him out of bounds or back inside where #98 was waiting.
11:10 #51 made this play great. Nice job. Just don’t dive at ankles. Have to wrap up.
10:33 #91 awesome shed and tackle. Textbook work here.
05:02 – This CANNOT happen anymore #99 needed to hit this man in the backfield. Not let guys run circles around you.
04:28 – Where is the defense? Someone point them out where are they?
04:02 - #93 just got blocked down. If he holds the point of attack the RB is forced to go elsewhere.
03:23 – Picture perfect by #21 here. That’s what you’re supposed to do.
01:12 – It was a good play but #31 should have been the one that made the play.
00:31 - Great Rush by #20, this was an awesome play.
00:19 – Good job no way he would’ve gotten the first even if he caught the ball.
4th Quarter
14:30 - #93 Great job on that forced fumble. #71 did a great job with the recovery. This was when the momentum shifted.
13:30 – Pass rush was weird. Either way #2 needs to pick this ball off and house it. Great opportunity there.
12:55 - #44 and #59 went to the same receiver which allowed the easy completion to the back. That can’t happen either. Mental Mistakes.
12:27 - #2 needed to have that sack. No excuse there. That QB is not faster than our #2. That was a straight up sack. Still a good play because #44 forced that fumble.
09:44 - #3 needs to come make that tackle and not get bullied for extra yardage.
09:09 - Good play by #92.
08:49 – Terrible call at this point in the game. They were running underneath routes the entire game. BC was just nickel and diming the defense.
08:19 – Once again they snapped the ball before we were ready.
07:55 - #45 had a good shot at a pick as well.
07:39 - They snapped the ball before we were ready again. Great coverage by #3 they can’t keep up with our speed when they throw deep. So they were nickel and diming us.
07:35 No pass rush. That will happen every time.
07:23 – Great pass rush and hit by #52. That forced the incompletion.
07:19 - #93 and #71 got too far upfield. Leaving lanes for the RB.
06:58 – Ball snapped before we were ready. We got lucky when the receiver dropped the ball.
06:54 – Is beyond inexcusable. Terrible call and execution. Just doesn’t make sense. The only person close was the LB who was rolling with the TE.
04:49 – Another Screen.
04:27 - This is absolutely inexcusable there is not a soul that’s within 10 yards of back.
04:14 – Good job here.
04:09 - Where is the pass rush? You’re up two scores with less than 5 you KNOW the opposing team is going to start throwing the rock. Your ears should be pinned back for these chances.
03:45 – Good pass rush here. Forced that ball to come out early. BC QB has a pretty good release on these throws.
03:42 - #7 you have got to look at the football man. We had a chance to get off the field. Keep that head on a swivel. I expect better from a 5th year guy.
03:35 – Where is the pass rush???
03:31 – Third Time is the charm. Great read by #52 to blow that play all the way up. If #52 didn’t make that read it would’ve been a touchdown.
03:18 - #7 needs to pick this ball off. He had the perfect opportunity.
03:08 – Nice hit by #94. He totally made this play work.
03:02 – Good play two canes met the QB after the throw.
02:55 - #93 was close to the sack I wish he had gotten it. But good pressure for the incompletion nonetheless.
02:50 - #52 could have picked the ball off and sealed the game here.
02:25 Great Goal line stand. No one got pushed over.
00:01 - #21 Make this pick and house brother!!!!!!
