Comparing the two rosters trying to find any unit where 2010's better and I can't.

You can't be serious can you? Or am I reading this the wrong way?

2010's roster>2014's until further notice.

DL, LB, OL, DB, QB, RB, TE, and WR were all better. In terms of depth 2014 gets the nod, but more established players on the 2010 squad.

Objectively, 2010 was better. 2010 roster had 33 kids who were 4/5 stars. Our current roster has 28.

Call me crazy, but doing the same exercise with that 2001 team was kinda fun.

Sure there are some positions where it's obvious we aren't 2001-caliber (QB and DL, most notably), but imo the secondary is as good or better this year with talent and depth, the receivers are better (so much explosiveness there it's scary), rb is a wash at worst, OL is just as good too.

Not saying we're 2001, but goddamnit, if we're not as good, we're as close as we can get.

Depending on what your definition of talent is.

Who has more stars?
-It has already been posted the 2010 team had a higher amount of 4/5 star players.
Advantage: 2010

Who has more draft picks?
-2010 had 8 picks, 5 quality picks (1-3 (just to pick a number))
-2014 undetermined
Advantage : check back after the season

Who won more?
-2010 team won 7 games.
-2014 undetermined
Advantage : check back after the season

What team would I rather take over?
-2010 already know how they performed
-2014 undetermined
Advantage : My personal opinion is that someone from the 2014 team will start the 1st round draft streak in the next draft. There will be a good number of quality picks (4). I also believe the 2014 squad will end up with more than 7 wins. The 2014 team has less 4/5 stars, but believe have better actual talent. Who would I rather start with? 2014.

We'll find out pretty soon

can't believe we did so poorly with that 2010 roster. Shannon truly deserved to get fired for that. Putrid.

Now for fun imagine the 2010 roster with Charlie Strong as the head coach... Would've been a lot more interesting for sure.

2010 roster had far better starters. No idea whether the backups are any good.

Seems pretty close starter for starter…honestly I'd give the edge to 2014

Safety: 14
Corner: 10
LB: 10
DL: Push
WR: Push
TE: 14
QB: 14 (obviously betting on the unknown…but I think Heaps will have a far better year than JH)
RB: 14
OL: 10 (could be a push, but too much unknown with the current group)

I disagree pretty strongly that the 2014 DL is a push with the 2010 DL. In 2010, we had Allen Bailey, Vernon, Ojomo, and Marcus Robinson at DE. Bailey and Vernon are going to have long careers in the NFL, and Ojomo and Robinson were fairly productive college players--more productive than any DL last year, at least. Chickillo certainly is not any better than Bailey--I would say at his peak he's about as good as Ojomo-- we've seen nothing from Kamalu, AQM has shown flashes but was not at the level that Vernon was as a freshman, and nobody else at the DE spot has shown anything like Ojomo or Robinson did (though if you want to say that McCord is a DE, he is better than Marcus Robinson through two years). Forston and Regis were meh overall, but I see nobody on the roster at DT who can make a claim to even being "meh" at this point without some conjecture.

I realize I talked about some backups there, but even if you consider just starters, there is maybe one guy on the 2014 DL who would start on the 2010 DL.

I agree with you on everything except DL (2010) and CB (2014).

Let's compare the pre-season depth chart from 2010 to the pre-season depth chart for this season.

Offense (2014 wins 4-2)

QB Jacory Harris < Heaps/Olsen/Kaaya

RB Damien Berry < Johnson

WR Laron Byrd < Coley

WR Leonard Hankerson > Waters

TE Richard Gordon < Walford/Sandland/Dobard

LT Orlando Franklin = Flowers

LG Brandon Washington > Feliciano

C Tyler Horn = McDermott

RG Joel Figueroa = Isadora

RT Jermaine Johnson = Gadbois

Defense (2014 wins 6-1)

RDE Allen Bailey = Chickillo

RDT Josh Holmes < Pierre

LDT Marcus Forston = Wyche

LDE Adewale Ojomo < AQM

SLB Sean Spence > Armbrister

MLB Colin McCarthy < Perryman

WLB Kylan Robinson < Kirby

CB Brandon Harris < Howard

FS Vaughn Telemaque, < Bush

SS Ray Ray Armstrong = Jamal Carter

CB DeMarcus Van Dyke = Artie Burns

Specialists (2010 wins 2-0)

PK Matt Bosher > Goudis

P Matt Bosher > UF Transfer guy

So looking at this, I agree that I like this year's starters better. I could be biased.

Yeah the DL was tough. I tried to look at that by committee because that's truly how the position group is utilized. Look at what Bailey and Vernon actually did in college. To me, they were very underwhelming for guys that have been able to stick on NFL rosters--especially Vernon who appears he might turn into a situational star. Ojomo, Robinson, Smith, and Dye all were jags to terrible in ability.

This is one of the position group where the call will have to be made after the season because there is too much unknown. I'll say this…if Chick looked like Allen Bailey, I think people would easily say he's a push if not better. Chick already has more sacks than Bailey in 13 less game played.
