The first player to transfer to Miami this offseason, Zechariah Poyser, spoke to the media after spring practice on Tuesday. Here's what the safety discussed in his interview:

On Miami and Coach Cristobal:

“I'm really excited to be here. You know, it's always been a dream to be at Miami, so to have somebody like Coach Cristobal, a great guy, a great coach with a great resume, so man, that's a blessing, man. Coach Cristobal is a family guy. You know, I have a one year old daughter. He's like a father figure to me, you know. So, I seen that in him. He made me feel at home and in our discussion. So, I mean, that's why I chose Miami. It was a family environment.”

On what type of player he is:

Oh, it's been going good. Uh, I've been getting better day by day. You know, I'm a type of dude. I think God programmed me to be like a robot, I'm a day by day type of dude. So I think each day I've been getting 1% better and, you know, ultimately, ultimately being the best version of myself. I mean, I just want to play, bro. Like, I just want to get on the field. But I mean, I like all of them equally, but I mean, I just want to get on the field, bro. You know, I'm going to fly around to the ball. I'm a competitor, like I said. I don't quit on plays.”

On the New defensive staff & scheme:

“The communication is going great. You know, that's a big thing. Coach Hetherman does not play about [communication], and something Coach Harris does not play about. They're big on communication. So, as far as the defense, I love the defense.

You know, I've been learning all DB positions from star, nickel, free, and boundary. So I like the defense, I think I fit in pretty well. And there's a lot working with Coach Harris and Coach Etheridge. I honestly feel like not just saying it's because I'm at Miami, but I honestly feel like we have the best DB coaches in the nation. Like those two guys, a big resume, great resume, you know, so it's been great. It's been, it's really a blessing to learn from those guys.”

On how the secondary is developing so far:

“Oh, it's great, you know, because we all fresh, you know, so we all asking questions, we're all learning together. So I mean, that's big, you know, that I feel like that helps us learn even more. So we always asking questions, always around each other trying to figure out what's going on.

“I feel like we all hold each other to a high standard, but if I had to say a leader, I mean, a loud leader, I'd say Chuck, Chuck Brantley. Communication wise, like if you're not talking to Chuck, Chuck [will say] “Aye Z, Aye ZP, tighten up” you know, things like that and just make sure we on it. Like if someone, if a guy like Amari Wallace doesn't know a play, he'll tell him like what to do on it, you know, just out there like communicating.
[Secondary] guys just are ballplayers, you know, athletic. I mean, you guys can fly around.”

On how having a daughter has affected him:

“It's been a blessing, man. I got something to live for now, you know. Before I had my daughter, I was really just like, just living, you know. But having my daughter, I can't. I know, I got something to go home to. I know I can't quit, you know. So, it's been a blessing, man.”

Love that Brantly is like a coach on the field making sure guys know their assignment and are communicating. Crazy how bad the secondary was last year vs the potential this year. Good stuff
That was my biggest takeaway. An on field general instead of whatever we had last year.

Miami might have the.best db coaches developing and recruiting I see in 20 plus years

Would have been wild if he said, "honestly, I feel like our DB coaches are trash".
Let’s not forget Lance Guidry beat out Will Harris for him 🤣

“spoke at length with defensive coordinator Lance Guidry, who stressed they want him at safety (he also played nickel previously).”

“I talked to coach G – great guy,” Poyser said. “A high energy, funny guy.”
