Veteran Miami Hurricanes wide receiver Xavier Restrepo dished on several topics after practice today, ranging from the new offense under Shannon Dawson to the atmosphere in the locker room. He also touched on the unique tradition of "running through the smoke," an experience he finds incredibly humbling and emotional.
Embracing Dawson's "Fast, Fast, Fast" Philosophy
Restrepo had a lot to say about the new offensive game plan under Shannon Dawson, Miami's offensive coordinator. “First off, Coach Dawson’s such a players' coach. We fully trust in him, and when we take the field, he has full trust in us,” Restrepo beamed.The focus of the Dawson-led offense is speed and adaptability, urging players to be agile and fast-paced. “He really emphasizes fast, fast, fast. He calls us Playmakers, not robots, and says even if you mess up, at least mess up going fast,” Restrepo shared. This 'go-fast' philosophy fits well with the caliber of players on the team, with Restrepo confirming, “We've got some fast dudes on this offense.”
Team Chemistry and Tyler's Leadership
Another hot topic was Tyler, the team’s quarterback, who had a challenging last season. According to Restrepo, Tyler is in a far better place now, both mentally and physically. “Tyler’s confidence is at an utmost high right now, and it’s shining through the entire team, especially the offense. Tyler's hand is 100%, and he's looking really good,” he assured.Restrepo did not reserve his enthusiasm for Tyler alone, expressing a sense of togetherness that pervaded the team. "Whether it’s Emory or Jacurri (behind him), we're just excited to take the field as a team,” he added.
Special Teams and Rule Changes
Restrepo was coy when asked if he would return punts or kicks this season. "Whatever the coach has planned for the team, he could always use me if he needs to. But I don't think I could share that," he hinted.As for the new rule that stops the clock on first downs, Restrepo felt it wouldn't significantly impact their strategy. “If it’s to get on the ball fast, we’re going to get on the ball fast. If it’s a huddle, we’re going to huddle,” he stated.
Running Through the Smoke
For Restrepo, a South Florida native, running through the pregame "smoke" is more than just a tradition. It's a powerful, almost transcendent experience. "For me, when I’m running through the smoke, it’s just like a flashback to everything I’ve been through and all the obstacles I’ve overcome," he revealed.He's also been sharing this wisdom with the freshmen. “A couple of guys asked me, and I just told them, just take it all in. Don’t get star-struck, but don’t miss that feeling," he advised.
