WR Colbie Young, who had a big touchdown in the team’s scrimmage on Friday morning, spoke to the media after Monday’s practice – assessing where the offense is as a whole compared to last season’s team.

“I feel really good about how our offense is being more explosive, being more dynamic but it's kind of similar that we can still run the ball very well. We have a whole room full of good backs who can take the top off the defense. They can catch, they can run, very fast. If they get in open space they can take the ball 80 yards and when you have a good receiver core like we have, we love to see backs that can get in space and make some work. Just makes the passing game way easier,” Young said as he broke down the importance of a strong ground game.

Young and quarterback Tyler Van Dyke hit their stride in the middle of last season before Van Dyke’s injury issues halted that. Young was also a late arrival to Miami last year, and did not get a spring or summer session to build his rapport with TVD.

“We're definitely better than where we left off. We had two semesters instead of one semester to really get connected so now that we have a spring under our belt and now we're working until fall we're definitely better than where we were before,” Young explained.

As an entire offensive unit, Young thinks his side of the ball is better off than they were a year ago.

“I feel like definitely we are a little better than last year, not knocking last (year’s team) but we had little injuries here and there and then we're just more confident now, we're more together as a team. As a whole unit, we got a great O-Line, great quarterback and great running back (room), so when you combine that all together – receiver room, we just got to catch the ball at that point.”

Young highlighted the growth of the offensive line unit, which is arguably going to be the most improved position group on the team.

“We've seen it in spring and we've seen it in fall camp – these guys can really hold up the rush and we have a great lead line who's making our o-line 10 times better so I'm really excited to see how those guys perform in this trenches.”

New wide receivers coach Kevin Beard has also made a big impact on Young’s growth as a player, according to him.

“He helped me find myself for sure. He has a standard where I have to elevate my game to where I'm not doing things wrong, but he just wants me to be better as a receiver. How can I take my game to the next level? So if I'm doing good in college, he wants to see me play like you're in the NFL right now.”

When asked about the potential improvement in the downfield passing attack, Young doubled down on the importance of confidence, which was absent last season.

“We have a lot of playmakers and Tyler Van Dyke who's a great quarterback, he's putting balls in areas that are amazing so we’ve just been making plays. We're just all confident and when you have confidence it's amazing.”

I'm very optimistic about this with Colby, X, and TVD being on the field at the same time. If the other guys can occasionally contribute we should be good.

When we had lashlee and king in the covid year we beat everyone we were supposed to I guess but we weren’t competitive against Clemson and unc. And then lost to okie state after king went down. That’s what a good offense can do for you. I expect us to win all the games we should:
Miamis Ohio
Temple
Uva
Loserville
Bethune
Georgia tech
BC

That’s seven wins. These games I think we can win but will be tough:
Nc state
Unc

Split those and that’s 8 wins. Then the ones we will be heavy dogs:
Tamu
Clemson
Fspoo

Win 1 maybe. 9 wins.

Looking back at this. You guys 8 wins as an easy projection. Then a bowl game. You get to 9 wins with a bowl and this season is a resounding success. Big holes to fill for 2024 but such is life.

Players sound MUCH MUCH more confident about the offense and opening up the offense, that to me is first step. I had expectations for the offense but wanted to hear how the players felt about it going into season. I think these boys will surprise. I remember USC and LSU both killed bro style back in 2019 and LSU was talking about their new offense being wide open, NO ONE believed them, lol.. They were bro style FOREVER.. Now it seems hard to believe with all the success they had but no one expected those results going into season.. Im sure the interviews are still online, they had issues with drops from inconsistent wr, they had the "summer of 10,000 catches", then the Texas game happened..

Not saying we will be the same or expect TVD to win heisman after throwing video games 60 tds but just excited to see an actual offense dam near 20 years after the spread revolution and the players seems EXCITED to play in it also.. I remember LSU having identity issue too with old fans holding onto offense of past and even some players, that changed REAL QUICK..

Let's hope in translates to the field. I want Lashlee's TVD with a much better running game.
It wasn't just TVD. Gattis had all the QB's and skill players looking clueless, confused and non confident in what he was wanting them to do on offense! I just don't blame Gattis but Mario too. Good to great coaches put his current roster/players in the best position to succeed for a game, games or the season!

I don't think we realize just how bad Gattis was.

Even if Dawson turns out to be completely average, he will look like Lincoln Riley compared to what we had to deal with last year.

You're probably right. I can't count the number of times last season, that I saw players that were obviously confused about their assignments. That shouldn't happen. Bad calls, bad plays, and mistakes... will all happen in the course of a football game. But what I witnessed more than a few times last year, was something entirely different.

Surprised by the lack of moping around this comment.

Mope squad is slacking.

I think most mopes just want to win.. not really about run pass balance..

I'm pretty sure everyone wants a strong ground game. What smart people don't want is another dumbass OC try to force the run game over and over with no run blocking to help.

It's not about passing all the time or running all the time. It's about running an offense that best suits the players you have. The past few years we've had a shortage of good linemen and running backs, so throwing more made sense. With an improved line and better running backs, they should be able to have better balance.
