Coach Guidry and others have identified LB Wesley Bissainthe as a potential breakout player this season. Bissainthe spoke to reporters after the Canes’ second practice:
On what he learned as a starter: It comes with extra work. Just putting the work in, man. You’ve got to put the work in to be where you want to be. That's something I made up in my mind that I'm gonna do every day. You’ve got to be consistent.
On the tight ends: Very athletic. We have tight ends who can run and catch the ball. I feel like that's a big advantage on our part. I'm getting better every day just going against them. I know when I go against opposing teams, I'm gonna have to cover their tight end. So I feel like I'm gonna be ready for it.
On how much the game has slowed down for him: A lot. I have way more confidence. I know what I'm doing. Everything is slow to me. I just play fast. Knowing what you got to do will take you a long way.
On his leadership: Coming out of high school, I had no choice but to become vocal. Coming here, I feel like I carried that over. I’m being more of a role model to the younger guys. They look up to me. They go off my actions, so I gotta lead them.
On his connection with Kiko Mauigoa: We'll go over to each other’s house and play the game [NCAA Football video game]. We just try to build a brotherhood, a better connection. Kiko is amazing player and I'm blessed to have him next to me as we go to war. What Kiko did last year and what I'm about to do, it’s going to be some problems.
On the Miami Central pipeline: Just having Rockets come to the U, man, it's amazing. I’ve got no words. It's their decision. I have nothing to do with it. But it's amazing to have that pipeline.
On the young guys standing out: There’s [Adarius] Hayes, Cameron “Bobby” Pruitt. They're in my group. They come to me and ask me questions. I'll give them tips or things they could do to make them better on the field.
On trips to new ACC locations like California: I just wanna win. I ain't worried about where I gotta go. I'm taking it day by day, step by step, game by game.
On Jaylin Alderman: Great player. He's kind of a veteran. He knows what he's doing. I feel like he's gonna be a great addition to this team.
