Miami will add a late signee to their 2013 class on Monday, as American Heritage RB Walter Tucker (5’11”, 190) will sign to play both track and football.
“I’ve been talking about Miami for a long time and basically it’s a brotherhood. It’s like a big family. Coach Rumph told me it’s all about family when you’re coming to the U, it’s not just about yourself,” said Tucker.
Tucker had been decided on Clemson, but there was some disconnect between the Tigers’ side and Tucker.
“Basically they just wanted me to run track and I wanted to play both. I wanted to switch my scholarship to football and then walk-on to the track team, but Clemson wasn’t really offering that. Then I spoke with Al Golden and he told me I could run track as long as I continued my work on the football field.”
The two-sport athlete had some help from his coaches to get Miami’s attention.
“They reached out to me. Coach Rumph and my Coach Mario Perez also helped to push my name towards Miami.”
What role does he see himself playing at Miami?
“It doesn’t really matter to me, as long as I’m doing my job for whatever position I play.”
Tucker’s family is happy about the switch as well.
“They’re real happy. Basically they wanted whatever I wanted and whatever made me happy. They’ll have a party or whatever before I go of to college.”
If Tucker fits his self-proclaimed description, the ‘Canes might have gotten a steal.
“I describe myself with a big, physical person with a lot of speed. I’m a freight train.”
It’s no secret that Tucker has football on top of his priorities.
“Football has always been my passion, but I love track too because it helps me with my flexibility and my speed.”
**Tucker runs the 110 M hurdles, 300 M hurdles, and 4x100 relay.
**Tucker will enroll at Miami for the second summer session on June 25th
