The first domino has fallen as 2022 Lowndes (GA) 4-star QB Jacurri Brown committed to the Miami Hurricanes on Friday. Although many think UM still has 1 current commit in this class in DT Brandon Cleveland, most believe he will soon join Jamaal Johnson in departing. That leads to Brown being currently Miami’s only commit in the 2022 class. A leader and young man who is taking his talents to Coral Gables, the Georgia-native with a loveable personality is not only a leader on his own team, but is expected to be the leader of this recruiting class. Having ties and relationships with guys like WR Isaiah Bond, RB Damari Alston, S Jake Pope, and a few others, look for Brown to be the key to this class.
With Brown committed at QB, we turn our attention to the RB position. With Cam Harris leaving after this year, Miami will have potentially 4 RB’s on scholarship in 2022 in Jaylan Knighton, Don Chaney, Thad Franklin, and Cody Brown. Miami adding Brown to this class, fellow Georgia-native Damari Alston now seems like a perfect match, and with the help of Brown, I expect Alston to be the only running back in this class.
With the RB room getting back to the old days as far as creating legit depth, we go to TEU. The tight ends are always a reliable position in our offense, and I expect it to continue with names like Larry Hodges, Elijah Arroyo, and Kahlil Brantley. The tight end that is hot on Stephen Field’s radar is 6’5” Bellevue West (NE) 4-star TE Kaden Helms. Still a long way to go, but that is the name to watch for the tight end position along with Jaleel Skinner and possible wideout/tight end hybrid Marcus Peterson.
The wide receiver position group will be interesting in 2021 with guys like Mike Harley and Charleston Rambo, but the room will go from extremely packed to a possible 7-man rotation heading into 2022. Although the skill position talent in this class is somewhat lacking as far as high-caliber prospects in South Florida, the Canes have no problem looking outside South Florida and even out of the state. The names to watch are obviously Isaiah Bond out of Buford (GA), former school of Jess Simpson, and Bond is a 7-on-7 teammate of Jacurri Brown as well. Jayden Gibson, Quan Lee, and Landon Ibieta also make up the WR board, plus Isaiah Horton, who plans to take a visit to UM from June 4-6. Other names mentioned are Samuel Mbake, Mike Jackson and Shazz Preston. Look for the Canes to add up to 3 guys max in the WR class.
As far as offensive linemen goes, the Hurricanes have been steadily adding quality depth to that position. With 3 to 4 guys potentially leaving the line after this season, the Canes will need a couple bodies. OT Julian Armella out of Columbus (FL) High is the obvious top priority, and Garin Justice seems to have made a great impression. OG Deshawn Woods from Central (NE) High is another name to look out for, as of now, but expect a few other names to gain some buzz such as Tyler Booker, Grant Bingham and Leyton Nelson.
Now we transition to a defense that is filled with tons of talent once again after loading up on multiple five-stars in 2021. The defensive line position, specifically in Miami’s own backyard, is one position that is absolutely LOADED this class. Although the biggest names in South Florida don’t seem likely to stay home in Marvin Jones Jr., Shemar Stewart, and Kenyatta Jackson, there is still tons of talent. Homestead’s very own Dante Jackson and Daniel Lyons seem to have not only a close bond with each other, but with Miami as well. Adding an end and tackle like the pair would be a great addition, but as of now, the highest priority is Dillard (FL) DE Nyjalik Kelly. The current FSU commit seems to be loving everything the staff is throwing his way. Another defensive lineman high on Jess Simpsons radar in particular is Deerfield (FL) High DT Alton Tarber. The 325-pound tackle is right up Simpsons alley in what he looks for in this defense to pair with the athleticism of Jared Harrison-Hunte and Leonard Taylor. Other names to look for that recently jumped on the radar are Keahnist Thompson, Mario Eugenio, Zane Durant and Beau Atkinson.
We now move to the linebacker position, which has been lacking in recruiting and development for years now. The best linebacker in Miami’s backyard is no question Wesley Bissainthe out of Miami Central, and the staff has made Wesley one of the highest priorities, if the not the highest, in this class. The rest of the board looks like DeMario Tolan, Nyair Graham, Omar Graham Jr., and, last but not least, Travious Lathan, who seems to be more of a striker at this point. Other linebackers in play include Devon Jackson and Jaron Willis.
With Travaris Robinson at the helm of the secondary along with a great sidekick in DeMarcus Van Dyke on the recruiting trail, some of the top players in the secondary are putting Miami high in consideration. The highest priority in Miami’s own backyard is CB Jacolby Spells out of American Heritage; he along with teammate Earl Little Jr. are no question the best duo in South Florida. CB Jordan Allen, who seems like he will make an announcement soon, is 7-on-7 teammates with CB Khamauri Rogers, and the pair are very high on Miami. Adding the two with a Spells could be possibly the best cornerback class Miami has had in years. Ryan Turner, Trequan Fegans, Nick Cull, Jaheim Singletary, Ja'Cari Henderson, and Trevon Mullen are also in play for the Canes at corner.
Last but not least is the safeties. After landing the top safety in Florida the past 2 classes in Avantae and James Williams, the Canes will try to make it a third. April 1st is not only April fools and Canes’ legend Sean Taylor’s birthday, but also will bring an announcement from IMG Academy’s Kamari Wilson. We don’t know if the announcement is indeed a commitment to a program, but the Canes seem to be a top candidate for Wilson. Other names from the safety position linked to the Canes is Bond’s Buford teammate Jake Pope and Markeith Williams.
It’s not even summer yet, but the recruiting trail is heating up. With the staff Miami has in place, it seems like Miami is at least a top 3 team with many of the targets they are after. If I had to say the next 5 guys Cane fans should start to monitor it would be Jordan Allen, Khamauri Rogers, Ryan Turner, Kamari Wilson and Isaiah Bond. A lot of time left, but this is just a future look ahead of the 2022 class with the first domino of Jacurri Brown committing earlier today.
