The main message I'm getting about the Portal: the proposed House settlement and revenue share has shaken things up for everyone. Whereas the Portal used to be somewhat predictable, it is now a day-to-day process with wild swings. Here's the latest I'm hearing:

- As previously discussed on CanesInSight, Miami's top targets are as follows: an impact WR, a safety (possibly two), and a rotational DT. I expect Miami to add players at each spot. A LB is also possible if an impactful player enters the Portal (won't just take a body).

- While there were reports linking Miami to WR Trevor Pena (Syracuse transfer), that process is not nearly as far along as reported. One reason is that Miami is reluctant to block Malachi Toney from significant reps in the slot. Pena is a good player that will command a huge deal, but I think an impactful outside receiver is more likely at this time.

- Miami continues to feel good about where it's at with #1 overall prospect Jackson Cantwell (Nixa, MO). It's recruiting, and anything can happen on his visit to Oregon, but this is a strong relationship and a natural fit.

- As previously reported by CanesInSight, keep an eye on WR Brayden Robinson (Dallas, TX). Miami and Notre Dame led for him coming off his recent visit to Coral Gables, and Notre Dame just took a similar slot receiver/returner from Savannah (Bubba Frazier). He has high-end speed (10.4) and is extremely productive on the field.

- Miami is in the game with five-star WR and LSU commit Tristen Keys (Hattiesburg, MS). That will be a full process. One factor to consider: he recently signed a deal with Adidas.

- There have been rumors about certain players on the roster, and these things can change fast, but Miami feels good about where they're at in terms of roster retention.

- In addition to Toney, some names that look like they will contribute early coming off spring: TE Brock Schott, DT Donta Simpson and CB Chris Ewald.

Good I agree with that decision on pena. He had a productive season but he isn’t a difference maker. Can’t keep putting dudes in front of your talented young players. Got to let them play at some point

Disappointing news on Pena. Signing Pena and getting Toney playing time are not mutually exclusive. Sure…Pena might cause Ray Ray to hit the Portal but that’s a risk we should be willing to take.

Also, Pena does not mean we can’t sign an outside receiver with speed.

@DMoney what in particular makes the "proposed House settlement" more day to day for the transfer portal? What is the legislation called? I could ask chatGpt about it so I can keep abreast with it and see if it plays into Miamis advantages of being in FL and a private school.

This is the settlement that allows schools to pay players. So, more money (bigger deals) and a salary cap.

My brain runs to imagining Elijah Lofton and Brock Schott as TE 1 & 2.

We could run no-huddle the full length of the field while running any formation. A man can dream!

This. Its the other line of thinking where we dont stack talent at every position that caused us to waste the best qb in school history. Spending big money on Beck and not putting the best weapons around him is completely short sighted. Bring in pena and let toney battle. We cant have CJ, whose got an injury history, and the next closest returning WR with 150 yards in his career. Complete malpractice.

I wonder how big a NIL gap there is from Joseph to what Pena would cost to bring here, could be why we might pass.

So you’re proposing for Miami to sign Pena and have him on the field at the same time as Toney?

QB
RB
5OL
4WR

That’s an offensive package for a 2 min drill or down by 4TDs

Miami isn’t going to play 4WR and have Lofton on the bench.

uhhhh not wanting to spend money on pena when there is yet a WR1 who commands big money on the market?

If we dont spend the big bucks on pena we better use it to tamper a true WR1 and not just overpay for an non difference maker outside receiver.

Also soooooo how tf is LB not a priority ? Unless popo, wiley and adarius hayes stepped up but no reports indicate that????

Problem with that is Miami went “all in” again this year with a massive deal for a QB, and Toney should be in HS. I get he’s turned some heads, but we really don’t have the luxury to ease kids in at this point and put up with growing pains.

Last year was the best year we’ve had in a long time, but it still ended with a thud, and there are still questions about Mario and the program overall. We have to stack good to great seasons or this all has potential to turn toxic. Another way to look at it is, as good as last year was at times, with no ACC and no playoffs, it wasn’t so good that we can have even a small step back without the risk of a lot of the foundation crumbling.

Who is the better player today? It’s Peña. If you can get him while still begin able to add the pieces D mentioned, you get him.

We all hope and expect the defense to be better. That raises the overall outlook of the team. But you have to expect the drop from Cam to Beck will be, at minimum, small. Very possibly bigger. You can’t also lose Martinez, Horton, Arroyo, JG, and the best statistical receiver in the history of the school without equivalent replacements. The last thing we need is the defense going from a flaming bag of dog **** to above average, and the offense sliding back from best in the country to above average. We have to maintain something close to the offense we saw last year. A kid like Pena helps that significantly, and almost certainly more than a 17 year old Toney does.

Just my $0.02. I know there’s going to be a ton more movement in the portal.

Disagree we need a big wr

smart we have elite short wr on this roster now . Toney is elite and yes I would start him game one.

Ray Ray and Toney are competing for snaps in the slot. Pena is mostly a slot guy who can be flexed out. We need an outside guy. How can we sign someone on the outside, sign Pena, play Jojo, give the ball to Lofton, and expect to give Toney the amount of snaps he earned?

Mali is a special player so I'm fine with our slot situation & don't think it's on our list of needs. An explosive boundary guy is all I wanted at receiver. If the price on Pena gets too exorbitant then it's understandable as long as we absolutely kill it with the outside guy.

However, as Dawson said "the ball typically finds the best player." I agree, so Pena shouldn't stop Toney from getting snaps as long as he produces. Plenty of targets to go around so if Pena is affordable then it would be nice to solidify that room with more experience.

The settlement doesn’t impact NIL opportunities. Players can still earn from outside sources. Correct?
Also, the House settlement will be challenged immediately upon the decision. Probably won’t hold up

My contacts up here in Clemson are hoping the house settlement gets thru, and are thinking if they can just get to that point they are going to be fine.

What I gather from Miami side is they dont want the house settlement or need it.

My takeway is the schools without elite collectives are wanting the rev share deal.

Someone correct me if my thinking is off.

Maybe @TheOriginalCane has some insight?

The salary cap isn’t turned off. You have to be smart with where you allocate your money. This dude is going to want big bucks which means he’s going to command most of the snaps. Give the young guys a chance. Plus I think we’re going to be run heavy ball control this season. We need someone that can keep the safeties back.

I’m all for developing players but there is no loyalty in CFB. Beard developed Horton and he left for Bama after his one good year.
