Stock up players in camp

With two weeks of practices and as scrimmage in the books, I wanted to identify some names that are rising based on numerous conversations with sources. These guys are performing in camp with consistency:

CB Romanas "OJ" Frederique, Jr.- The 6'0, 180-pounder from St. Thomas Aquinas has long arms, 4.4 speed and textbook movement skills for the position. While he played in all phases last year - a rarity at that program - he also went through a learning curve at corner. He gave up a long touchdown in the opener against St. John Bosco and maintained a three-star rating on all the recruiting services. But Miami trusted its in-person camp evaluation, and they were rewarded with a player that has vastly outperformed his ranking on Greentree.

Frederique displays outstanding patience at the position, while still retaining the playmaking skills from his wide receiver days. The Canes have been searching for an impact corner in recruiting, and Frederique may provide an unexpected boost at that position before the bumper crop of 2025. I wouldn't be surprised if he played big snaps this year.

WR RayRay Joseph- Nobody has ever doubted Joseph's ability with the ball in his hands. The 5'10, 185-pounder was a running back in youth football and possesses outstanding quickness, balance and burst. But he's been working tirelessly to improve as a receiver, and the results are starting to show. He's having an excellent camp at slot receiver, and his tackle-breaking ability plays up whenever Miami goes full-contact. He's also going to play a major role in the return game.

QB Emory Williams- I believed Reese Poffenbarger's athleticism gave him an edge for the QB2 job coming out of camp. One factor I may have underestimated was Emory Williams's arm injury, which he suffered in the FSU game. While he played in spring, he didn't look fully healthy and in shape. In August, he looks stronger, sharper and better in all facets and is providing a steady, "do no harm" option as backup QB.

RB Ajay Allen- This is another guy who is finally healthy. Allen was solid last year (361 yards, 5.2 ypc, 5 TDs) despite playing through a shoulder injury. However, Allen - like the rest of Miami's RBs - lacked explosive runs. He looks stronger and more decisive in camp and should play significant snaps in a loaded room.

This is great for depth

Saw Manny predict 1,000 hards for Martinez. My guess is they spread the ball around and try to keep everyone fresh, so that will be very tough to do. I would not be surprised if Martinez gets it 20+ at Florida.

We will play at least 12 games and it should be closer to 14. If he doesn't have at least 1,000 something went wrong.

I don't even want to utter these words..butt God forbid if Cam does go down with something serious it's nice to know Emory's got that dog in him and Reese can break the pocket.
Obviously the offense will be lacking elite QB skills but it could be a good one two punch to salvage the season or even sneak us a win or two if Cam's hypothetical injury is a week by week basis.

Any game that matters Martinez should be getting 20+ touches. Everyone else can wait their turn till next year.

Good to see OJ in the mix though. As much as people are worried about our secondary this year, next year is concerning

this and then unleash ForthQuarterFletcher to just run them into the ground.......

I mean hopefully we can roll on offense and keep Martinez fresh all year. But that **** we did last year was ridiculous. I know we didn’t have a main back but the way we constantly rotated backs was absurd. Yes keep them fresh but you gotta let running backs get in rhythm

Excellent write up. The legend of Romanas continues….

Frédérique is the guy that we never seemed to land in the past…underrated SoFla kid that punches above his “recruiting rankings” weight class. Far too many times were we the team that wind up with 4* kids that punched below their weight class. Hence us being labeled the poster child of Overrated (always there in the Top 15ish for recruiting rankings but rarely if ever there in the top 15-20 poll at seasons end).

Was watching the OSU-UGA semifinal game from 2 years ago and at times I check out the rankings guys had coming out of HS. IMO the play that changed the entire game was when the DB (legally) knocked Harrison Jr out of the game - I just knew this kid was a 5* because he was literally shot out of a cannon and bazooka blasted Harrison Jr at the back of the end zone. Turns out that the kid was a 3* DB from somewhere in Georgia - Bullard was his name I believe. Ended up as a 2nd round draft pick or somewhere in that range iirc

Point I’m making is these (Frédérique/Bullard) are the type of evals we need to continue landing because your entire class gets a major shot in the arm when you nail on kids like these. Kids that are taking high 4*/5* players jobs (in Bullards case).

Nailing on a 3* eval who plays like a Top 100 HS kid can literally transform your team. At first of hearing OJ getting busy on Greentree, I figured he’d flash here or there and make a play….but this kid has gotten praise from Mario/Guidry, his teammates, and now he’s doing it on a consistent level during scrimmages.

I’m officially on the OJ hype train!

I don’t know if the staff will get the evals correct or not in the end, but the resources we are being given should let it happen

Some of these lower ranked guys that are a bit controversial with fans one thing I noticed was we would often see them multiple times, in person, and then offer. That didn’t really happen here in the past where we would have all these personal one on one evals with so many players but we have the resources now

Like I said I have no idea how it ultimately plays out, but we have the ability now. Not making excuses for some of our past coaches but they didn’t get what Mario is getting
