STA CB Davis talks recent UM visit, has “big interest” in Canes

St. Thomas 4-star CB Jaden Davis lists 43 offers, but there was one in particular that caught his attention last spring.

“I got the Miami offer last spring from coach (Mike) Rumph,” said Davis. “The feeling when getting an offer from ‘The U’ is amazing. I was in shock because it’s the hometown team and the school everyone from down here wants to go to.”

And it’s Rumph and his fellow secondary coach Ephraim Banda that have had the biggest impact on Davis’ Miami recruitment thus far.

“I hear from Coach Rumph and Banda the most,” Davis said. “I’m close with them.”

Davis, who lists himself at 5’11” 170 pounds, has been getting attention since his freshman season, but further cemented his status as an elite CB prospect after a junior season where opponents just couldn’t throw on him.

“My junior season went well, I had 4 passes completed (on me) the whole season, but we came up short and lost in the state semis,” said Davis. “We will be back next year.”

Davis’ current top 10 is a national group consisting of: Miami, Florida, Georgia, Texas, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Penn State, Oklahoma, and Syracuse. Of that group, who is Davis hearing from the most?

“Right now, the schools recruiting me the hardest are Oklahoma, Ohio State, Miami, and Syracuse,” Davis said before adding another school from outside his top 10, “And also Clemson.”

And two weekends ago, Davis got to visit one of his top 10 schools and experience what life might be like as a member of the Canes. He’s coming off an unofficial visit to Coral Gables with St. Thomas teammates Jahmar Brown, Anthony Solomon, Avery Huff, and other top targets that was taken on Saturday 2/17. The coaches had all the visitors with each other the whole day and the attendees’ toured campus, met current Miami players, went to the Syracuse basketball game, and saw the academic buildings.

“The visit was great,” Davis said. “Anytime I’m down in Miami with the guys is a great day.”

The current players from St. Thomas have a great bond and have talked about all playing together at the next level.

“Yes, I would love to go to school with some of my teammates, especially Jordan Battle and Semar Melvin, we talk about it all the time.”

However, Davis’ Miami visit wasn’t the end of his college tour: he was at Florida this weekend and will be at Clemson next weekend. Still, he sees returning to Miami for an official visit as a possibility.

“I still have a big interest in Miami and we are still in talks about my official visit,” Davis said. “What has me interested in Miami is the family aspect and the winning tradition they have there.”

Davis plans on getting his decision out of the way earlier than most so he can focus more on his senior season.

“I want to make a decision this summer,” Davis said. “I’m looking forward to winning a state championship; anything less is not the STA-ndard.”

When it comes time to make his decision, what will Davis be looking for most in his school of choice?”

“What I’m looking for in a school, besides academics, is a family, not just a football team,” Davis said. “Also, an opportunity to play early.”

slight typo, you say "huff" when you meant Davis when you said "two weeks ago..."

did you get the impression he is a strong UM lean? UF had been rumored to be the favorite here, so, just curious where you think we stand and if you think UF is the favorite.

Strong UM lean? Definitely not. Seems very open to me, especially when you compare talking to him to talking to a kid like Kenny Logan.

He lists family, academics, and early PT fornwhat he’s looking for. Check, check, and check.

Can't let him get away! Hope friends, teammates, being home, academics and potential early playing time mean what he's saying is important to him.

5’9 166 at the Miami combine last weekend. Nickel only? Or can he play outside at that size ala Malek?

Yup, probably best served at Nickel but I'm a huge fan of this kids tape and could see him contributing out wide as well if necessary. Active hands, fluid hips, great instincts, aggressive play maker, and dissects the field of play really well. He's a Jaquan Johnson, Trajan Bandy, Malek Young type of kid. Absolute 110% football player, a bit undersized, but unarguable pure football player that I take all day every day.

All these kids from down here say the same thing family environment, academics and early PT. If they really wanted these things we would have a top 3 class every year. Actions speak louder than words.

About as smooth a cover guy as there is. Been excelling at the highest level of HS football for a long time already.

I could be completely wrong but this seems like a kid that was all about UF but may make a business decision and put on for his hometown by committing to the U.

You should never underestimate your "enemy", but UF doesnt concern me recruiting wise for '19.

We must dominate STA recruiting. Davis, Soloman, Huff, n Carter are all takes. We cant slow play Davis like we did Bandy and Samuels. Yea size isnt ideal but these guys are dogs. They tackle, they cover, and they don't backdown. On a semi-related note can't slow play Carter either. His tape is impressive and he looks college ready. We can't holdout hoping for Saunders and Cain, when Carter is really really good.

Seems like they have Mcintosh ahead of Carter. I think they are very close. I can't argue with them wanting Mcintosh and his size, and if you twist my arm that's how I would lean, but they are close enough for me.

Do you think Battle and Brown are takes as of now? Battle def is imo, and Brown is very close imo

Ingraham is a take as well and they seem to be treating him as such.

Brown isn’t a take IMO. I think we slow play him as we feel out Eaford.

last year he started over al blades as a junior should tell u all u need to know

One of the few true corners we're recruiting. From a pipeline school. At a need position.

Gotta land him.
