South Florida '18- The DEs

Aside from the perennially loaded WR and DB groups, the strength of this class is pass rushers. There are so many that I had to divide them into two groups: DEs and hybrids. Below are the guys I project to play as down linemen. Of course, a lot will depend on where they sign and how they grow. But regardless of where they line up, these guys can get after the quarterback.

Kayode Oladele- 6’5, 234, 4.87* (Champagnat)- Raw specimen who learned about football by watching YouTube videos in Nigeria. When I first saw Oladele last spring, he looked like a college junior. Natural strength and powerful hands. Oladele was the only guy on the camp circuit that physically overwhelmed Delone Scaife. Transferred from Edison to Champagnat to pair with Miami commit Greg Rousseau.

Andrew Chatfield- 6’2, 221, 4.92* (American Heritage)- Broward County Defensive POY with 24.5 sacks. Alpha mentality. Knows how to use hands and long arms to keep tackles off balance. Has another gear when closing on the QB—elite finisher. He can play up but I project him with his hand in the ground. Only drawback is the lack of elite measurables.

Best Defensive End / OLB In 2018 #D2D - Andrew Chatfield highlights - Hudl

James Head, Jr.- 6’3, 220, 4.91* (Southridge)- Teamed with Randy Charlton to form the most dominant DE duo in the state. 19 sacks as a junior. Elite change-of-direction (4.34 shuttle) at his length. Has a knack for deflecting passes like Demetrius Jackson. Some added strength will take his game to the next level.

"Edge Predator" - James Head Jr. highlights - Hudl

Dante Lang- 6’5, 222 (Boca Raton)- Gifted rusher with production. Highly athletic. Excelled at TE on the 7on7 circuit. Wins with lateral quickness and movement skills. Good height. Narrow frame up top but has some lower-body size.

Dante Lang (JR) Highlights - Dante Lang highlights - Hudl

Demetrius Mayes, Jr.- 6’2, 225, 4.95* (Northwestern)- Tough, upright player with some athleticism. Mayes started turning heads with an MVP performance at the Rivals camp. Plays DT in high school but projects outside at the next level.

All Season 16 - Demetreius Mayes Jr highlights - Hudl

Uchenna Ezewike – 6’3, 188, 4.96* (sophomore measurables) (Stranahan)- Underrated pass rusher who put up big numbers at the small school level. Good get-off and deceptive strength. 3.68 GPA. Plays with a high motor and chases a lot of plays down from the back side. If he fills out his lanky frame, he will be a steal for somebody.

Hansky Paillant- 6’3, 220 (Miramar)- McArthur transfer who will spend his senior year on the famed Dark Side Defense. Wrestler. Plays DT in high school but projects outside. Very disruptive straight-line rusher. Recently landed offer from Charlie Strong.

Robert Hicks- 6’ 237 (Central)- Booker T. transfer who brings experience and toughness to the position. A little tight in space, which is why I project him to stay at DE despite his height. Strong with a good motor.

Good ****.
I really am surprised by the complete lack of interest in chatfield by Coach Kool.

But hey, if he gets a crazy pull like Parsons idgaf. then again, i really don't care either way because I know Kool is going to get us great DL regardless....but still it's a little surprising.

Really, really like Kayode. Seems like the next Joe Jackson.

Coach Kool can turn him into a 1st round pick.

Hope we land him

I would assume that Kayode Oladele is Kool's no1 target in SoFl.

Love oladele and we need him. Wouldn't mind chatfield or head, either.

I'm really surprised we took Rousseau when a guy like Lang looks nearly as athletic with a better frame and film.

I'm not surprised about the lack of interest in Chatfield. If you look at the DEs that Kool recruits they all have a minimal amount of size and length that Chatfield is missing. Kool obviously likes longer, athletic DEs that he can put weight on and coach up to become athletic freaks like Aldon Smith and Kony Ealy.

Hansky is built like a college sophomore /junior..they played him at dt and ol at mcca last year. If I had him I would of lined him up at DE and let him do work...he definitely is a div 1 de.

Honestly I'm not worried about dt in 2018. We will have one of rj or norton most likely bethel and jon ford with dj maybe sliding inside. Thats like a good amount very good of players who r not true frosh and nesta and someone else will b there to.

Love Kayode just absolutely dread dealing with beetlejuice looking douche genron

Exactly. Kool has recruited so well that he can set strict measurable requirements. Chatfield will probably sack a lot of quarterbacks in college, but we will be fine as long as Kool is here.

Even Shane Ray and Charles Harris are legit 6.3-6.4 guys.

Yeah but that's only an inch shorter than chatfield because both of those guys are listed at 6'3. I still think he gets an offer. Too talented not to imo

Imagine Rossau his third year in our program at like 6-6 240 pound terror off the edge with that speed

Those guys aren't 6' 4", but it seems Coach Kul rightly emphasizes length more than height. And, finally we have a coach who understands context in rigid "size" requirements. I bet Kul would have taken a closer look than most did at the 5' 11" Elvis Dumervil's 6' 5" wingspan.

His best DE at Missouri, Michael Sam, was only 6'2

Like Lu alluded to above, wingspan matters. Michael Sam's wingspan was over 66 inches on a 6'2 frame. Shane Ray also had a wingspan of over 66 inches.

Those wingspans can't be correct. Perhaps Ridler meant 76 inches. There's a difference between arm length (which is actually even more useful) and wingspan. Wingspans are usually at least the height of the person. Then you have players like Jon Garvin who may be 6' 3" or 6' 4" (75 or 76 inches) but might have an 80"+ wingspan. Njoku, for example, had something like an 82.5" (6' 10.5") wingspan. Dude's a weirdo. He basically has an elite shooting guard's measureables..
