Some thoughts on the Wake game after rewatch

I’m not going to pretend I was feeling great the first couple hours of that game. But the end result was just what the doctor ordered. Four-score win, no injuries, and a bounce-back game for the defense. Some thoughts upon rewatch:

- The Canes held Wake to their worst offensive performance of the season. Seven points, 3.4 yards per play, and 12 first downs. That first possession shook us as fans, but this was dominant defense coming out the bye.

- I hope we continue to increase the snaps for Bobby Pruitt and Popo Aguirre. This team lacks guys in the back seven who can run laterally and stop people as tacklers. It seems that every horizontal play the last couple months has gone for 3-4 extra yards due to lack of speed, lack of striking, or both. These guys have the ability to help there.

- Two developmental success stories: Jacolby George and Ahmad Moten. George has continued to improve his toughness and effort when he could’ve washed out. Moten has emerged as an impactful ACC DT in Year 3. We need to do a good job of retention in the offseason, because I believe there are several talented players deep on the roster with the ability to develop if they are patient and committed.

- The offensive line was overwhelming yesterday. We ran for 228 yards (7.4 YPC) and gave Cam Ward hours to throw. The film was a highlight reel, with defenders being pushed 7 yards downfield. This is why Cam came to Miami- we have the ability to dominate when him and his top receiver are not at their best.

- Elijah Arroyo is in the class of our most talented tight ends. David Njoku is one of the best in the NFL, and I believe a healthy Arroyo is even better. Njoku has rare explosive athleticism, but Arroyo is just as fast and a better route runner with more consistent hands.

- We need to clean up the operation when we go tempo. We’ve had multiple procedure penalties that have stalled our momentum.

- OJ Frederique deserves first team All-ACC consideration. We are taking these clean sheets for granted. He’s been consistent as a tackler, too.

- Our kickoff coverage is a significant concern. Any team we’ll play the rest of the way will have talented returners, and the margin for error will be thin. Markeith Williams had tough reps on this TD and the Louisville TD. I wonder if a coverage safety with limited physicality is the best option for his role.

- Jordan Lyle is the most complete running back prospect we’ve had in a while. He has NFL size, he has balance, he has quick feet, he’s tough, he has vision, he can protect, and he has speed. It would have been painful to see this guy running at Ohio State.

- I hope Tyler Baron reacts the right way to the benching. We need his pass rush down the stretch, but he has to be disciplined and committed against the run.

- It was nice to see us get the young DL in there at the end. Any time we see Josh Horton in uniform playing is a positive.

- I love the way Mark Fletcher plays the game. Right after he made a 30-yard run to get us in the red zone, he was mauling a defender for Damien Martinez as a lead blocker. He is part of a championship-caliber rotation at RB.

- Dylan Day continues to flash on special teams. I’m excited to watch his development at safety. He reminds me a bit of a young Sheldrick Redwine.

- Pretty good crowd at the Rock. Miami-Dade schools are out all week, so you had some fans on vacation and some UM students visiting home. It was very loud when Meesh Powell had that pick 6.

10 win season. Massive step forward as a program. We’re in the drivers seat for a playoff spot, just can’t choke against Cuse.

But dear god am I terrified about what a potential drop off looks like next year with no Cam. This is a team that has had to scrape and claw their way to 10 wins despite having the #1 offense, #1 QB, and a crazy easy schedule.

But I’ll savor the moment and enjoy this for what it is. Let’s go beat the pïss out of Cuse and win our first ACC title.

My wife was watching Coop during the game and the comments early were absolutely insufferable. I had to continue to reiterate that most of those are just trolls and fly by fans that are over reacting.

If you didnt watch the game and just looked at the score and stats, its apparent we dominated. I believe we went very vanilla on offense as well. We did show a new look or two, but it was mostly very simple in the route dept. I did appreciate a few designed outside runs with one counter play in particular that Martinez only got a yard or two on, but refreshing to see something else in the run game besides the ol dive.

The defense can only get better as they are getting healthier.. right??

I expect the team to be fully prepared for the game next week and will do what it takes to get a win, style points be damned.

Lyle should have been getting more reps all season. I like Mesidor as DE. Great adjusting from coaching staff now let’s best Syracuse!!!

one day removed i feel better about the win and the defense ... shoutout to the staff for sitting baron, a few of my friends have said for weeks that if we can sit martinez, we should definitely sit baron ... kiko looked vintage yesterday ... gotta love mezzi and i hope he gives us another season exclusively outside ... bain needs to kick inside, period ...

Getting Alston and Brown back next week should be a huge help.

We need to stick with the rotation once Barron got benched, and we put it Popo/Pruitt. Defense and tackling against the run improved a lot after we did. Add Alston and Brown and we might just be able to continue the momentum

Why do you say Bain has to kick inside? He has a great play for sack on 4th down with and great rip move, beating tackle with quickness and strength. I wouldn’t want to shelve that forever.

he's a natural big kid with great strength, quicks, and a high motor ... but he doesn't have nfl length (pause) and no speed rush at all ... i think his tools will equate to a helluva dt, while i'm not sure we'll ever see the production we saw as a frosh at de again ... the book is out, he's gonna try to bully you and guys are prepared

You make it sound like Alston and Brown are definitely back against Syracuse. Don’t believe anything until you see it with your own eyes. Mario cannot be trusted when it comes to injuries.

Brown was warming up yesterday, why wouldn't he?

So no speed rush you say, yet the play I referred to was clearly a speed rush. Beat the tackle right from jump. In NFL, he may be a better at DT, won’t argue, but in college, he has proven to be VERY effective at DE

Nice to hear some positives. Cam hasn’t been perfect the last 2 weeks but he’s still put up numbers better than most and all I keep hearing about is how he’s fallen out of the heisman race. Travis hunter has been making plays but I’ve seen him miss tackle’s and give up receptions and touchdowns. Absolute joke how they look at things. As for our team they haven’t been perfect either but so many people want to be negative about them. Other teams win comeback games and it’s amazing. When we do it we’re lucky, or the other team got screwed. Other teams have lost a lot more games than us but they’re really good? We’ve won 10 games . I watch and hear from every announcer about our targeting and penalties only to watch the other team do the exact same thing and no one notices or says a thing. I watch a lot of other games and no one seems to see or say anything about the same type of plays. I’m use to all of it from a national point of view. I know your either a fan of the U or your not. I’m also use to a lot of fans that expect us to win a national title every year. I’m sure when we beat Syracuse by 20 they’ll be a lot of people who complain about what Cam or the rest of the team did wrong. After so many years of struggles can we just support the kids for all the good things they have accomplished so far. Hopefully they can keep it going but there’s so much to be thankful for this time of year. Just support and enjoy the season and the remaining games because the season will be over to soon even if we make it deep in the playoffs. Happy thanksgiving to everyone. Be safe and enjoy. GO CANES!!!!!!!!

The way Lyle was running yesterday, I almost feel like we should be starting Lyle/Damien Martinez with Fletcher coming in later to sub or on 3rd downs. Lyle has McGahee/Portis type playmaking ability.

I feel like our overall team speed is lacking on the defensive side of ball in particular at LB and secondary. We definitely looked better yesterday against wake but how much was due to wake just being a bad team? I hope some of the changes on D plus brown returning will help greatly. We should win Syracuse game but SMU will be dogfight. I am hopeful and still optimistic that miami can make the playoff which will pay off huge in dividends with recruiting and the portal. Go canes!

I know a lot of people are saying Lyle should have and should be playing more

Not debating that but people asking why he wasn’t playing more earlier in the season remember we were throwing at will and Fletcher and Martinez are really good blockers

Not that Lyle isn’t or can’t be just saying it’s a crucial role in our offense

Yes I assumed blocking was part of it. I agree with you. We just need as much team speed on the field against teams like like smu and if we make playoff. I am much more concerned about defense obviously and for good reason.

i think we all fell in love (pause) with idea of martinez and fletcher and didn't think of the lack of lateral speed, suddenness, or consistent burst ... we will however miss martinez's power and lean
