Some Dante Phillips clarification

There are reports out there that Phillips is eligible per the NCAA sliding scale, which means that if his GPA is not high enough, but test scores are above average, then he could be qualified, and if his GPA was above average, but his test scores were not up to par, he could qualify.

Miami does not use the sliding scale, therefore the only way he would be able to qualify would be if the school made an exception, which is rare. Phillips had a GPA below 2.5

How ******' stupid do you have to be to get below a 2.5 in high school? I highly doubt he was taking anything challenging.

i had 65% unexcused absenses and passed with a 2.8. should be easy to get a 2.5 if your showing up at least half of that.

pcity ol never goin to class *****....sounds about like my percentage, still averaged a 3.0

through 180 school days junior year i had 118 unexcused absenses. I was on 4 or 5 attendance agreements and they suspended my licens.e

Definitely looks like an OT all the way. There's a big assumption there-- that clip only has two plays at OT--but I know this much: (1) he has the perfect OT tools at 6'6, 270 with long arms and good coordination/flexibility; and (2) he's not a Hurricane defensive tackle. No force off the ball.

If we bring him in, I hope we don't waste any time and put him right there on the OL.

if you had to put a percentage on it based purely on numbers and needs, what would you say the likelyhood is of being a Cane?

We were calling his coaches last week to conduct due diligence on him, so he's definitely on the radar. I'd say 50/50 just because these things tend to fall apart.

I remember those days. They would have an automated phone call everyday. Then at 50,100,150 etc they would send letters home. 118 is a nice number. I don't remember my exact ones but they were close to that. Dante musta been slippin.

It was my thought as well that he would come in as an OT.

Let's hope.

Maybe...and if so i feel bad for the kid. But this "'possible" excuse is brought up about every kid with a low GPA or low SAP scores in high school these days. Sometimes i think the term "learning disability" these days is being severely overused and at times is really no more than result of bad schools, kids not getting a proper education as children, gliding through school never being held accountable (or parents being held accountable ), having trouble reading and then finally getting to the point where grades and standardized testing means something and falling short. If they are stars, someone finds a way to bend the system and get them into school. If they aren't stars, they are just another number lost in the system. Didn't Gerard Warren get through UF while not being able to read higher than an elementary school level? How is that possible?

Eh...maybe I'd take him if we put him at OT. I think he's a kid that was overrated by the sites, he was a 4-star, but looks like a mid-low 3 quality...he's a good player, but a bit of a project, and an obvious grade risk.

Bottom line with Phillips: he did not do what he needed to do, he brought this on himself. As I stated before do not expect this kid to suite up in the state of Florida, obviously that could change but I am not sure UM let's him in.
