DeAndre Burnett is one of two current signees for Miami’s 2013 basketball class. A 2012 recruit out of Carol City High School in Miami, Burnett went the prep route this season and is currently attending Massanutten Military Academy.
“Everything’s going good, we’re 19-1 right now and number one in the country. I feel like I’ve contributed a lot towards that so it feels good. I’m averaging about 25 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals.”
How would Burnett describe his game for those who haven’t seen him play?
‘I’m a combo guard and playmaker. I can score, defend, and also get the ball to the open man. I can basically do it all.”
Much like Davon Reed in last night’s story, Burnett is not surprised at how the ‘Canes are performing this season.
“I’m not surprised at all because the seniors are stepping up and doing what they’re supposed to do. I feel they can finish top 3 in the ACC and possibly make a Sweet 16 because they have a great mix of bigs, guards that can shoot, and a point guard who can get them the ball.”
The prolific scorer described his relationship with Head Coach Jim Larranaga.
“Me and coach Larranaga talk almost every other day. He gives off a real family vibe and makes me feel like I’ll be in a family environment when I get back home. He makes me feel even more at home even though that is my real home.”
Burnett became a big name later in his high school career, and the hometown Hurricanes were one of the first big-time programs to show interest.
“It made it a no-brainer choice to go there. If your hometown school wants you then why not go there? It’s going to be real special to play in front of family and friends and it’s going to feel like high school all over again so it’s not really any pressure.”
Burnett is already preparing himself for the role he will have on next year’s team.
“I just want to be a playmaker and not shy away from the ball and play my game.”
The Carol City product will be playing in a tournament next week, where fellow Miami signee Davon Reed will be playing in as well.
“I’m looking forward to seeing who I’ll be playing with next season. I’ve heard he has a great work ethic just like me.”
Miami football fans are also interested in Burnett because his brother, Dalvin Cook from Miami Central, is one of the top players in the country for next season. Cook is currently committed to Clemson, but Burnett has high hopes that will change.
“Every time I talk to him I just tell him why not make it a big family thing at the University of Miami right at home with a very known football program. It’s not a sure thing he will go to Clemson, and I have another year to change his mind. I also tell him to just remain focused and keep his eyes on the goal in life.”
