In his weekly press conference, Canes OC Shannon Dawson spoke about the recent game, discussing the development of young talents, crucial game-changing moments, and the physical prowess of the team.

Commenting on freshman quarterback Emory Williams’ growth during the game, Dawson observed, "Throughout the game, it looked like Emory got more and more comfortable. He had to make some plays at the end, which I knew was going to happen. When it was his time, he made them." Dawson further emphasized the significant throw Emory made on third down to extend the drive, saying, "Very astute observation. That was a small window. If he doesn’t make that throw, we don't win the game."

On being asked about the emotions of watching a young player develop in such a high-pressure setting, Dawson likened it to being a proud parent. "I was very proud of him and the way he handled himself throughout the course of the game. Doing it in practice is one thing, but doing it in front of the fans, especially against a top defense like Clemson, is a whole other deal."

He also didn't hold back on praising the offensive line's role in providing Emory the necessary protection during the game. "Unbelievable performance. We have the best O-Line in the country, along with the best O-Line coach. Emory got hit just once. It was as solid a performance against a really tough defensive front."

Talking about the multi-talented Brashard Smith, Dawson revealed, "Smith has shown the ability to make a play, whether it's as a receiver or coming out of the backfield. His skill set is similar to some guys I've had in the past. He's not just a receiver; he played Wildcat quarterback in high school. The more I’m around him, the more trust he gains."

When asked about Colby Young’s contributions, Dawson remarked, "He made some nice contested catches. The touchdown catch was awesome, against one of the best corners in America. The third and eight catch he made to keep the drive going was crucial. We had to have it."

In terms of the game's challenges, Dawson acknowledged the defense's efforts, stating, "The defense was playing a lot of snaps. We had to possess the ball to give them a break. They were playing so well and had a lot of snaps."

Looking forward, Dawson offered insights on their next opponents, Virginia, noting their defensive strengths. "They're riding the momentum of a two-game win streak. Structurally sound and well-coached. They probably want you to make the mistake. They like to keep that umbrella over the top."

Concluding the press conference, Dawson reflected on the recent overtime game experience. "Coming out on top helps because it gives confidence. But I'd rather not go into overtime games. The process was good, but I didn’t want to call another two-point play."
