RHP Jackson Cleveland transfers to Miami

Miami continued to deepen its bullpen with the addition of RHP Jackson Cleveland from Lamar. Cleveland is a strike-thrower with an impressive 5.1% walk rate. He played in 20 games (four stars), going 5-0 with a 3.80 ERA over 42 ⅔ innings. He had 36 strikeouts and only 9 walks.

Cleveland was a major part of a Lamar pitching staff that finished the regular season ranked first nationally in ERA and WHIP. Last year, he played 12 games (four starts) as a sophomore and went 4-4 with a 2.74 ERA. He also had 14 at bats that year.

A Texas native who began his career at NC State, Cleveland is Miami’s 11th Portal commit joining C Tanner Smith, OF Max Galvin, OF Bobby Marsh, OF Derek Williams, 1B Todd Hudson, RHP Griffin Hugus, LHP Rob Evans, RHP Reese Lumpkin, RHP Will Smith and RHP Carson Fischer in Miami’s Portal class.

I'm guessing Caba and/or Walters will be converted to weekend starters w all these bullpen/mid-week types we're picking up. Still need 1 - 2 legit weekend starters, so, hopefully that is ongoing.

Yeah I think there is a very good chance that Walters and or Robert end up being a starter next year. Especially since Robert has ideal size to be a starter.

Can't complain about this one. Throws strikes.

Anybody know his velocity? Secondary pitch?

Some of these lil schools must absolutely despise us. All in one off season we've turned into the new york Yankees of the portal. Small schools beware.
Unless there’s some sarcasm I’m missing here…which if that’s the case, I apologize for the below breakdown.

Sorry to dampen the parade here. Is he a good arm? Sure he’s fine. In the ACC however, he should be a 5th or 6th option out of the pen.

92-93 is decent but it’s pretty flat, not much movement on his fastball. His mechanics are fine, explodes off the ground when he throws…but his frame = absolutely tapped out velo wise. Slider is ok, decent break but he doesn’t tunnel it with his fastball exceptionally well. It’s good don’t get me wrong, it’s just nowhere close to an elite bullpen arm imo.

Against P5 opponents in 2023, here’s how he fared…

Baylor: 1 inn, 1 hit, 0 runs (or K’s or BB’s)

Texas A&M: 2 and 1/3, 3 hits, 2 runs (both earned)

Oklahoma: 2 and 1/3, 4 hits, 4 runs (all earned)

So he got hit a bit by actual quality teams. Baylor is garbage, they went 22-31 overall and 10-20 in a very down BIG 12 conference.

He’s got some save experience which is always a plus, but he had a 5.81 ERA heading into conference play. He feasted on garbage competition, finishing the year against McNeese and he gave up 5 runs in 2+ innings.

D$ trying to use Lamar’s team stats to cover up his, but opponents hit .268 off him in 2023 and it wasn’t much better in 2024, allowing close to a hit per inning…in a conference where only two teams had over a .540 winning percentage. The level of competition in the Southland is nothing close to the ACC.

Stop acting like we’re killing the portal. We are doing NOTHING compared to UF, LSU, Texas…the BIG DOGS. That’s where we should be as a program. We want results? Pay up, don’t beat your chest for terrorizing inferior and small schools. We’ve taken a lot of quantity, just not a whole lot of quality.

This is nothing more than a .500 team at best, as of right now. Wake me up when we actually sign covered portal guys. When we’re beating Tennessee, FSU, UF, Texas, Arkansas, Clemson, UGA, Vandy, UNC, etc for recruits.

I would assume he is coming in to potentially claim a weekend rotation spot.
Doubtful, only 9 of his 42 appearances between this year and last year were starts. I think there is a high likelihood Walters or Robert ends up being in the weekend rotation.

Yeah I saw that…I just know we are running out of spots some of these guys are going to have to be a starter…and out of all these kids I’d say he might be able to go out on a Sunday and compete.

I’m really concerned if we don’t nail these last few spots.

Yeah I am too. The gap in upside between the pitching transfers and the hitters we've brought in is concerning to put it lightly.

How many more roster spots do we have available for transfers, if we were to assume the top freshmen pitchers leave to the draft along with Gage and Rafe?

Great question…I guess if they feel they can get upgrades they can trim most of the incoming kids and kick them to JUCO’s.

But I would assume we are down to the last handful of kids.

personally (and this doesn’t relate to Cleveland), if we’re going to be scouring lower level talent for average options that aren’t even being sniffed by real P5 teams…

I’d look towards the JUCO rank more. There’s a ton of talented kids we could grab to help this roster, hungry guys eager to prove their worth at the next level and some with multiple years of eligibility. Kids with solid tools that translate to the P4 level and into pro ball.
