ProCanes NFL Recap: Week 1

In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past 30 years, it is no secret that the University of Miami is prominent for sending players to the NFL. 36 former Hurricanes currently make a living on Sunday’s (and sometimes Monday’s and Thursday’s), which is tied for the fourth-most out of any school. With that said, here is the Week 1 recap of your ProCanes.

In his first appearance back in his hometown as a Miami Dolphin, RB Frank Gore had 9 carries for 61 yards against the Titans, which only leaves him 15 yards away from sole possession of 4th place on the NFL’s all-time rushing list past Curtis Martin. Duke Johnson, the all-time rushing leader in UM history fresh off signing a three-year contract extension with the Browns, had five carries for 17 yards and one catch for eight yards. Former Dolphin Lamar Miller held his own for the Texans, carrying the ball 20 times for 98 yards.

At wide receiver, former first-round pick Phillip Dorsett had seven catches for 66 yards and a touchdown against Houston. Allen Hurns was targeted three times for the Cowboys, hauling in one ball for 20 yards.

Miami has been unofficially given the title Tight End U for a reason, and it’s only right that there’s going to be appearances by multiple former UM tight ends on the stat sheet. Packers TE Jimmy Graham had two catches for eight yards against the Bears, while Panthers TE Greg Olsen had two catches for 33 yards. Even though he never suited up for the football team, former UM basketball player Erik Swoope had himself one catch for 13 yards. And now entering his second season in the NFL, Browns TE David Njoku had three catches for 13 yards in a tie against the Pittsburgh Steelers. 2018 fourth-round pick Chris Herndon made his debut for the Jets on Monday night but did not record a catch.

Moving over to the defensive line, the monstrous Calais Campbell, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, was very disruptive for the Jaguars as he totaled 3 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and one sack.

Ray Ray Armstrong, who played safety in his time with the Canes, is now a converted linebacker for the Giants and had six tackles in a loss to the Jaguars. Coral Gables High product and Chargers LB Denzel Perryman had four tackles against the Chiefs.

Miami has also had its fair share of defensive backs in the league. Former first-round CB Artie Burns added a couple of tackles for the Steelers, while S Deon Bush had one tackle for the Bears. 49ers safety Adrian Colbert had himself quite a game with five tackles of his own.

Can’t ever forget the special teamers. Falcons K Matt Bosher, who handled both kicking and punting duties for the Canes from 2007-10, is actually handling kickoffs and punts. He had six punts for 286 yards against the Eagles.

There are a couple of injuries to report, as Texans OL Seantrel Henderson suffered a season-ending injury against the Patriots after breaking a bone in his ankle. After suffering a high ankle sprain in practice on August 27th, Olivier Vernon has not seen the field since and did not play against the Jaguars, with Coach Pat Shurmur noting that they will monitor the injury on a week-to-week basis.

No love for the offensive line? I heard Flowers had a bad day.

ProCanes proof right here. Out of everyone on this list except USC, we are the only team that either doesn't have a national title or didn't play in a title game in the last 11 years..(during our "Down Years" 2006-2017). **** we didn't even win our conference until last year! Yet we are still #4!

Sure wish we could put a QB into the league again.
