Miami Mentions: 2020 Rivals250 - Preseason Update

The preseason update of the Rivals250 for the class of 2020 was released today.

And there was plenty of movement in the most recent version of the rankings, as there were tons of movers and shakers after another round of camps and evaluations revealed new insight on the rising senior class.

How did Miami and Category20 do? The Canes' total number of commits inside the Rivals250 actually stayed the same since the last update and held steady at six, but how they got there was a little bit different than two months ago. From last update, the Canes lost commitments from WR Bryan Robinson and DE Samuel Anaele, while TE Dominic Mammarelli fell out of the rankings. However, UM gained a pair of teammates in Oakleaf stars OT Jalen Rivers and DE Chantz Williams, as well as IMG Academy WR standout Michael Redding. Of Miami commits, Rivers got the biggest bump, leaping 26 spots to #183 overall, while RB Don Chaney is still UM's highest ranked commit on Rivals at #38 overall.

With the cycle closer to winding down, there was a surprising lack of Miami targets on the list as their board has really narrowed in the past month or two.

Without further delay, here's a handy, dandy list of the Miami commits and targets in the newest Rivals250.

Miami Commits (New Rank/Old Rank/Change)

RB Don Chaney
: 38 <-- 30 (-8)

WR Michael Redding: 67 <-- 37 (-30)

S Keshawn Washington: 133 <-- 138 (+5)

OT Jalen Rivers: 183 <-- 209 (+26)

QB Tyler Van Dyke: 198 <-- 184 (-14)

DE Chantz Williams: 202 <-- 217 (+15)

TE Dominic Mammarelli: NR <-- 242 (N/A)

Miami Targets (New Rank/Old Rank/Change)

LB Justin Flowe
: 3 <-- 2 (-1)

CB Elias Ricks: 5 <-- 5 (N/A)

TE Darnell Washington: 18 <-- 15 (-3)

S Avantae Williams: 50<-- 36 (-14)

OL Sedrick Van Pran: 72 <-- 77 (+5)

TE Theo Johnson: 155 <-- 199 (+44)

TE Maliq Carr: 157 <-- 155 (-2)

Thoughts

I find it interesting when there is a huge rankings disparity between the services, and that's exactly true in the case of Miami commit S Keshawn Washington. While 247Sports and ESPN have dropped Washington into the mid three-star range at this point, Rivals is holding steady to their original evaluation of Washington as a top 150 overall talent and even gave him a small bump up of 5 spots in this update. Washington was a camp standout over the 2018 offseason after a strong sophomore year, but didn't have the best junior season and missed out on participating in the 2019 offseason camps due to recovery from shoulder surgery. It will be intriguing to see if he can regain the form he once had as a long, rangy, and athletic safety prospect this year, or if his senior season makes clear that he has already hit his ceiling. I'll be watching.

**Miami TE commit Dominic Mammarelli continued his slow and methodical fall down the rankings, completing his drop from the Rivals250 this time. It's very tough for anyone to maintain his high perch when he's not showing up to off-season camps AND his high school team throws the ball 5 times per game. Again though, the fact that he is still rated a 4-star by Rivals with such little exposure shows you how impressive Mammarelli's raw tools are.

**The industry continues to warm up to Canadian TE Theo Johnson, who moved up 168 spots on 247Sports last month and now leaps 44 spots on Rivals. Johnson proved he was an elite TE at the Opening Finals last month with both top-notch production at the event as well as freak-like testing numbers. Another bump I agreed with was Rivers moving up 26 slots, as he proved he could play tackle at the next level against a very good DL field at Paradise Camp. Rivers looked at home working at left tackle most of the night, as he’s trimmed some bad weight from his frame and gained some quickness on the edge. The length and physicality has always been there with him, and he's exciting prospect for Butch Barry to mold.

Mammarelli is dropping because he didn't go to camps. His HS team doesn't throw so I'm surprised he didn't do more 7on7 to improve his receiving.

Definitely passes the look test and is a flexible, talented blocker on in his clips.

Got my eye on Darnell Washington. I want Enos to flex the Williams to Mallory/Jordan combo on the field this season.

Come on, Darnell. There is only one "TE-U" and that is only found at Miami. All them others saying they are Tight End U are just pretending. LSU and UGA recruiting told Washington they were TE-U... lol Get... the f@#$... out!

Kinda hurt himself but good for him for being loyal to a school that doesn’t make him look good.

Our favorite Italian tight end will be able to step in and compete from day one cause he has the ability to block. Might need refining in his receiving skills but I think he’ll be a good one for us. He’s been extremely quiet but he’s about as loyal as you could ever imagine a blue chip prospect being. He’s stayed at his school this entire time even tho they don’t throw the ball and make him look good. Most would have transferred. Gotta love it

He's not a natural pass catcher. Very raw but he was a tad overrated by Rivals originally.
Horsesh*t. He's one of the 20-30 best WR's in the nation, there's a bunch of kids they have ranked ahead of him who aren't half as skilled nor have the traits he does.

His performance at The Opening was more than enough to get him a bump in the ratings, both services were high on him when he was uncommitted, as soon as he announces to Miami & not FSU they immediately start dropping him even after he was one of the best on the camp circuit.

It's politics to drive certain teams class rankings up/down based on who the scouting directors & analysts decide should be highly ranked.

You wanna know who's overrated AF, Arian Smith. Kid was a RB at Mulberry, barely ever played WR, but as soon as he transferred to a powerhouse in Lakeland & started getting attention from UGA, Bama, FSU, UF etc, all the sudden he gets high 4-star 96 rating & is a top 15-20 WR?? Mind you, the kid hasn't played a snap at Lakeland yet, he just transferred there back in the Spring & has been a RB/KR his first 3 years in High School, what legitimate reason is ranked ahead of Redding?

Malachi Wideman is another one severely overrated. I'm not arguing that Redding is top 5 or top 10, I'm simply saying if you actually examine some of the kids ranked ahead of him, there's literally not a single rational explanation for why they are other than who they're committed to or being recruited by.

And again, there hasn't been a camp in a whole month so what exactly has taken place since June/July that would have kids raised or dropped? This sh*t is completely arbitrary.

Strictly talking Rivals rankings bro. You’re response appears to be based off of his composite ranking.

Rivals had him as the 30th beat prospect in the country and he dropped to a Top70 kid(Which is around where he should be). He’s a solid top 150 prospect with sky high potential. If you watch him run routes and catch the ball...I’m sure we can agree the kid is raw. His athleticism is ridiculous tho. Rivals also has him as a Top10 receiver which I can agree with. 247 and ESPN are the ones a lil lower on him with ESPN being the primary reason he dropped after committing to us. 247 has actually bumped him since he’s committed to us.

After following recruiting for the past two seasons I’m learning that these rankings are trash anyway. Kids are overrated/underrated every cycle by guys who’s never played a down a football in their life.

Camps are for offers and bag chasers, if u want to go to Miami and already are a part of the class fuq the camps. I mean thats how I would be and fuq the rankings I would just ball in college then yall can rank me.

I don't agree. He should have transferred for his game to grow. For us(Miami) it's a great thing especially if the early evaluations was on point and he turns out to be a top TE. I wouldn't be surprised if he falls to a 2*. Not being on the camp scene this off season plus another season in that offense no one can be mad at his slide in the rankings. I just hope his skills when he gets here are Miami level.

Yeah you can’t drop Redding because he’s “raw” yet increase Arian Smith who is extremely raw. I believe we, along with others, were recruiting him as a DB.

Yeah but then you couldn't go on a bag tour of official visits before picking Miami anyway and then ****ing on the other schools' hats on signing day.

I mean I would def take the bags and run. But these kids plan that and I think temptation is too much for them to overcome cause they not only getting bags your families moving your mom n dad got bangin jobs. Then u got big ego and the "cool guy" hs coaches and handlers telling them take the money and run or use this school.

When what you're doing is the college sports version of fake news media you can be faulted for not attending a non-existent camp....and so many rankings are fake anyway.

Remind me of back in the '80's when the late recruiting guru the late Max Emfinger talked to a friend of a friend and told him he was scheduled to speak on a local radio station somewhere and said he had to switch his rankings around to be more interesting to that station's audience.

By the way: what is a "hot take"? I've been accused of doing hot takes.

I have no idea abt his family but all that costs $ perhaps he has wanted to be a cane and his parents are confident in his scholarship offer

Who cares about the stars the coaches did their evaluation and thinks he Miami material, that’s all that matter
