A lot of the talk surrounding Miami commitment Ray Lewis III (5’10”, 185) has been about what position he will play at Miami, and he says that hasn’t been completely solved yet.
“Coach Terry Richardson recruited me and we have a great relationship. I’m being recruited as a safety too, it’s either DB or running back. When I went down there to tour the school on spring break, obviously the running back coach wants me at running back, Coach Al Golden wanted me at corner, and the other defensive coaches wanted me at DB too. It’s probably gonna be one of those things where I’ll try out when I get there,” said Lewis III.
It won’t really matter to him what position he plays, because he feels comfortable at both running back and defensive back.
“I love hitting people just as much as running them over. If I’m not playing DB it’s not gonna be a big transition, I’ll just stay at running back because I don’t really have a preference. Obviously with running back, the career is a lot shorter than playing defense,” he said.
While he may not be the fastest, Ray thinks he’s well rounded at running back.
“I feel like at running back I’m explosive in and out of cuts. I have like a 4.5 hand time, but I’m not like the fastest person. I feel like I’m good at reading when the hole is not there, when to bounce it out, when to not bounce it out. Yards after contact is something else, I rarely get tackled by the first tackler. I’m a team leader too, like if somebody misses a block, instead of getting on them I just encourage them.”
Being the son of future a Hall of Famer, Lewis III thinks it’s a positive that his dad pushes him harder than others get pushed.
“He knows what it takes to get to that level. He was not somebody that was just made it to the NFL, he had to work. I feel like that’s an advantage I have over everybody else. I am pushed by him definitely, but I really don’t want to let that whole Ray Lewis thing get to me. He is my dad, but at the end of the day I still gotta go out there and play because my dad’s not gonna be playing for me,” added Lewis III.
He plans on being on campus for Rising Senior Day on August 12th.
