The Miami Hurricanes have their new defensive coordinator, former Minnesota Gopher coach Corey Hetherman.

After the Hurricanes fired Lance Guidry, the Canes were looking for a proven P4 defensive coordinator whose defense displayed proper alignment, communication, discipline and toughness.

Enter Hetherman. His defense's numbers at Minnesota are strong across the board, with equal success against the run and the pass. Below are some of his key stats from the previous season, with national ranking in parentheses:

That third down stat concern anyone? I mean, we had third down debacles all season long, giving up long TDs.

I watched Iowa put up 31 against him. Can’t say hiring a guy from PJ Fleck is considered a win in my book.
The Iowa running back went insane that game. Minnesota qb also threw a bad pick in their own territory.

First thing I did was watch that game to figure out how on earth it happened. Came away thinking it wasn’t terrible defensively and Iowa’s running back is unreal 😂

Only time will tell, but I truly believe he is the answer. I was hopeful with Guidry, but I feel confident about Heatherman. He might end up being the coordinator who helps Mario put the Canes in that "permanent" top team status.

Watched 0 snaps of Minnesota's defense in 2024. Just comparing yards and secondary, it says the very thing we all knew.

Minny had 2 games of 250+ yards allowed passing (293, 323).
Miami had 6 games of 250+ yards allowed passing (270, 297, 303, 325. 342, 380).

Minny allowed 11 passing touchdowns in 2024 (27 total).
Miami allowed 22 passing touchdowns in 2024 (38 total).

Minny allowed 4 games to where they gave up 350+ total yards (352, 361, 373, 427)
Miami allowed 8 games to where they gave up 350+ total yards (365, 370, 370, 394, 405, 415, 448, 479)

I’ve got some concerns regarding Heatherman. 1) His short tenure does raise some questions. Seemed like Guidry got figured out and just regressed once coaches got tape. 2) He did avoid Ohio State, Oregon and IU. Arguably the top 3 offenses in the conference.

At the end of the day tho you can only play the opponents in front of you. And they played very well against them. And even if he doesn’t turnout to be the next big thing, I’ve got faith he at a minimum should perform better than the mess Guidry was. Where we couldn’t even get the most basic concepts down like where to line up.

334 total yards and 5.22 a play. Not awful.

Iowa had a drive that started at the Minnesota 38 after a terrible INT, and they scored. That was their only points of the first half. Iowa did run the ball pretty well after the half, though. Had 2 decently long TD drives, and a short one after a punt and good return.

McNamara was 11/19 for 62 yards in the entire game. Kaleb Johnson killed them though, over 200 on the ground. I think Johnson is RB2 on some boards behind Jeanty. He's a stud.

Minnesota was less ground and pound this year which makes the defensive stats even more impressive imo.
He is coming from a well established staff with sound defense/alignment so I expect growing pains but he did well with equal or inferior talent without gimmicks which is telling for his future in Miami

KISS

he said they will not be very complex
Play together and play fast
Detailed oriented and fundamentals first

For some reason, other than the good games Manny had, we have been slow footed, on our heels, reacting on defense for over a decade
Getting athletes to Miami should not be an issue and allowing them to play downhill should be a given

Man as long as he can make adjustments we’ll be fine

I'm far from sold on this guy, but merely being competent would be a huge improvement. So, cheers I guess.
