Jaylin Alderman: Coach Hetherman puts a lot on the linebackers

LB Jaylin Alderman hopes to bring a veteran presence to new DC Corey Hetherman's defense. He met with reporters to discuss the scheme:

On new defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman and his defense:

“Coach Hetherman’s a great coach. A lot of his stuff he brought from Minnesota and we’re just trying to watch as much film as possible, as we can, so we can continue to grow and get better. … He just focuses a lot on details and a lot of urgency and a lot on being a team, being together. So, I feel like that’ll help us come this fall and later on in the season.”

On how he wants to improve his game this spring:

“Just working on my body from that standpoint. Continue to get bigger, faster and stronger. Just know the defense inside and out and just be a leader, a veteran guy. Just want to make the guys around me better.”

On what’s asked of the linebackers in Hetherman’s defense:

“Coach Hetherman, he puts a lot on the linebackers, as far as communicating. So, he looks to us to get everybody else engaged, have urgency with everybody and have us make the calls.”

On how he sees his role evolving:

“I want to be a leader of this team. I want to set the standard to where younger guys that come in whenever I leave, or years from now, that’s the standard. That’s where I want to continue to grow and just improve my overall game and just be the best person I can be.”

On which linebacker is stepping up to be the vocal leader of the room:

“I feel like we all play a part in that. As far as me, [Wesley Bissainthe], [Raul Aguirre Jr.], we all just try to set the tone every day. That could be running on and off the field; that could be getting everybody on point. I just feel like everybody plays a role in that. We all want to get everybody better and we know that Coach Hetherman coaches the linebackers, so we have to.”

After sitting in on Hetherman's clinic I feel much better about the LB room going forward. They're being coached completely differently than they were previously. Hetherman showed LB footage from his previous stops and he had those guys looking like animals.

We still need to improve the natural talent in the room, but I think Hetherman will get everything be can out of this current group.

Hope so. Lot of talent to work with Wiley. And Pruitt even though small, can be very productive by some schemes

Maybe it’s finally a good thing we don’t run a defense that ‘puts a lot on the Safeties.’ Because I’ve never seen Safety play like what we did this past season, but even during Manny Diaz days, there was entirely too much weight on what Safeties needed to do.

Man, I hope so. I've felt our LBs have underperformed for years. When's the last LB we can call a "development success"? And you would think we could come up with one or two playoff caliber guys from this list:

Chase 4 star, Top 300 Composite
Wes 4 star, Top 200 Composite
Popo, 4 star, Top 300 Composite
Hayes 4 star, Top 200 Composite
Wiley 4 star, Top 300 Composite
Pruitt 4 star on 247 but 3 star on composite
Alderman and Marcellin 3 stars

Thurston Armbrister?
Good point. Our LB play has not been what it needs to be.
We have talent, we need to find better results out of our development.

Amazing footage of Coach Macho’s reaction to every new defensive coaching staff since D’Onofrio…

This happens so regularly, the clinics are now required to have an FDA Warning ....

*If you experience an erection lasting longer than 4 hours after meeting the new coaching staff, seek immediate medical attention as this could indicate a serious condition called priapism, which can lead to permanent damage if left untreated.

Safety first everyone...

Mario took this guy not because he was fast.

I just need to see why. And maybe it's just something we can't see. He may just be one **** of a locker-room presence. He may have a high floor at the CFB level.

My gut says no, but heart says "show me dawg!!"

He’s too slow. That isn’t changing. We need a major upgrade in this room. Don’t be surprised if we bring in multiple LB’s soon.
gotta believe Wes and Popo maybe bounce which if their playing that bad I guess that’s not the worst thing…

It’s been what 5 years since Quarterman and Pop belly Pink were the last glimpse of “good” LB play looked like

You're a bigger wet blanket than the one they used on Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.

Because he played for the old LB coach

Because he played for the old LB coach

He was decent at UL as a starter though. Definitely looked faster there than last year at Miami in the UL games I watched him play.

That said, I agree with others on here that believe we need a higher caliber starter.
