It’s not even UM basketball. UM basketball has been the sole bright spot for UM sports over the last 12 years.

Success is often pretty simple. I get that there was no Larranaga available this cycle… but there are plenty of mid major coaches who have demonstrated that they know how to run a team, win games, and make their program better.

Make that list, identify the features you prioritize to build your program (recruiting, X & O’s, leadership, organizational skills, fundraising, etc), and then pick from the guys on the list who fit the profile.

We just jumped on a 36 yr old hype train.

Could work. Should have money.

But maybe check with Rutgers to find out if it’s just about recruiting.

Go canes… with a sigh, because this was an enormous missed opportunity. Especially if they’re gonna throw money at basketball NIL.
Hasn't Rutgers only had 1 good yr recruiting? I think the idea is to stack top classes on top of eachother....

I don’t think you can really stack classes in basketball unless you’re a blue blood. You can try to develop 4* recruits but that is a tough model in the NIL era. Elite recruits are one year rentals.

NIL has made money and coaching acumen the primary traits for success, IMO.

Only upside was learning about a dozen schools for the first time. I like Mitch Henderson out of Princeton

Yeah, that list was ****. Who would hire a guy from, what was it, "George Mason"? Sounds like a made-up school name...

Yes, to two guys (you and cookiestoss) who have already boarded the Lucas Train and are busy ****ting on anyone/everyone with a differing opinion.
Listen here toolbag - I have never once said that Lucas was my first (Will Wade was) or even 3rd or 4th choice.

That said, we were never poaching a TJ Oetzelberger or even Chris Jans/Chris Beard. Richard Pitino would have been equally polarizing and ‘uninspiring’ to most.

This is a high risk/high reward swing but I’d much rather be going this route over a sitting mid major HC who has never coached in the conference or navigated the current NIL landscape.

With the program on life support (per your description), you would suggest a head coach whose tournament tested & deeply experienced…. Good call
