In his first contact with Miami last month, 2020 Dublin (GA) 3-star LB Romello Height picked up an offer from Jon Patke and he feels it was a big one.
“I got a phone call from the linebacker coach and he offered me over the phone,” Height said. “It’s a big-time offer - it’s a big school, nice school, good defensive school.”
Now that he has an offer from the U, how does he describe his interest in Miami?
“That’s a school that I always wanted to hear from,” Height said. “I’m highly interested in them.”
The next step in the process is to take a visit down to Coral Gables and get to know the coaching staff better. The 6’4” 210 pound Height most recently visited UF for their spring game, but says he could see himself on UM’s campus as soon as next month.
“Soon, but they don’t really do officials like that in spring, so it’ll be an unofficial,” Height said of Miami. “I’m thinking maybe around the beginning of May.”
Miami is recruiting Height as an outside linebacker, and he recognizes the opportunities that Miami’s defense can give a playmaker like himself.
“They were the #1 team in tackles for loss, they’re some dogs on that side of the ball,” Height said. “I terrorize the quarterback. I’m quick, I can use my hands real good. I know how to use my hands, I play with my hands a lot. So that style of defense is what I love."
Although Dublin wasn’t able to go all the way in 2018 and fell to Heard County in the 3rd round of their playoffs, Height still felt like he performed well individually, recording 9 sacks on his junior season.
That play has led to a lot of recruiting attention for Height, and besides Miami and Florida, there are a few other schools that are in constant contact with him.
“Georgia Tech is on me hard, Virginia, Vanderbilt,” Height said. “That’s what I look at really, which coaches are in touch with me most. You’re going to have to work to get your spot anywhere, so that doesn’t matter to me. So I go by the coaching staff, and the relationship they have with their players.”
What other factors is he going to be looking for in his school of choice?
“A good academic school. I gotta think about life after college too, so it’s not all about sports,” Height said. “I just got to think about jobs after college, it’s hard to make it to the league, it takes a lot to make it to the league, a lot of work.”
Wherever he ultimately ends up, Height plans to enroll early at his school of choice. In an effort to focus on his final season of high school ball, Height will not be making any decisions during the football season this fall.
“If not in the summer, it’ll be in December on early signing day. I don’t want to commit during the season, I wouldn’t do that to my team. I’d rather be focusing on the season than recruiting.”
