While many top ranked recruits usually try to focus on one sport to prevent any possible injuries in their senior year, 2014 Saint Petersburg Catholic (Fla.) tackle Reilly Gibbons isn’t stopping at just football as he plans on helping his basketball team this winter.
“I’ve played basketball since I was a kid, I was always too big to play little league football so I played basketball and I play for my team.”
Gibbons admits that playing hoops does improve one skill of his for the football field.
“Footwork for sure. A big part of basketball, especially being a big man is being able to move your feet. The footwork and balance I’ve had since being a kid has really helped me along with the quickness and the conditioning. It’s a different sport but it definitely overlaps on a lot of skills in football.”
The 6’6 294 pound tackle is a Hurricane commitment and is excited for the upcoming match-up this Saturday with the in state rival Florida.
“Man I’m hoping that Miami kicks the heck out of Florida, there’s so many Gator fans in my school and all they do is talk crap and I really can’t wait to come back on monday and say ‘Haha’ in their faces.”
While the St.Petersburg product is going to be enjoying himself rooting for the Hurricanes, he will be looking to see how well running back Duke Johnson does.
“Well Duke Johnson’s a heck of a runner and the offensive line looked great this weekend, so I’m sure that they will keep that up.”
As for a final score, Gibbons’ prediction has the ‘Canes edging the Gators out.
“I think it’s going to be a pretty tight game either way, I would like to go with 21-14 Miami.”
The Miami pledge recently attended the Hurricanes barbecue event in which several recruits and commits got the chance to hang out and see the team scrimmage.
“The barbecue was awesome, I got to see all the guys who are committed and all the guys who want to be committed. For all of us to be down there together at the same time, it was a great time.”
While there, Gibbons and other commits got the opportunity to work on other top prospects who were looking at Miami.
“Johhnie Dixon, he’s a great kid. I got to watch some of his game last friday. We all were, you always want to recruit your class.”
*Gibbons is looking to take his official visit to Miami, once Miami’s season finishes.
