As the Miami Hurricanes get ready to kick off the season, freshman defensive back Damari Brown sat down with media members yesterday to discuss his transition from American Heritage High School to college, his relationship with his brother Davonte, and the promise he sees in Miami's 2023 recruiting class.

From Heritage to Hurricanes: The Transition

When asked about his transition from high school to college, Brown was candid, noting the increased intensity in practice. "I'm taking it day by day but it's really different practice-wise. It's more intense here. We get after it every day," he said. According to Brown, the goal is to improve "one percent" at each practice and prepare both his body and mind for the grueling college football season.

A Versatile Role

Damari Brown is no stranger to different defensive roles. When asked about his position on the field, he said, "It's a little different but just a versatile defensive back that's been in the nickel for a little bit. I kind of do dual training me at nickel spot and as well as the outside."

Preparing for the Big Stage

With the first college game on the horizon, Brown appeared both humbled and excited. "It's really a blessing," he said. "It's going to be 10 times more fans; it's just going to be a big experience for me that I'm out to soak in and just treat it like a soldier."

Brotherhood On and Off the Field

Brown shares more than just a last name with Davonte Brown, he shares the field. According to Damari, Davonte has been an invaluable resource. "I'm learning from him; he's a seasoned guy. Any tools and nuggets he gives me—'Lil bro, you got to do this, you got to do that'—I'm taking in."

In response to a question about the key skills or traits he would take from his brother, Damari highlighted humility and poise. "Off the field, it's about being that low maintenance guy, staying true to myself – just being humble and good to people. On the field, it's about playing my techniques, just like a technician."

Brown said he and his brother have never started the same game together, which is certainly a possibility come next Friday against Miami (OH).

A Driven Class

Damari isn't the only freshman looking to make a significant impact. "This whole class has been eager and just been working," Brown said when discussing the collective drive of Miami's 2023 recruiting class. "They did a good job placing these freshmen on this one team because in a year or two the sky's the limit for us. I can see that now."

Physical Preparation

As far as physicality is concerned, Damari believes he's taken strides since high school. "I probably got faster. The body fat in percentages probably dropped. I just got stronger though, I know that for sure," he said, emphasizing how the summer training program helped prepare him for the rigors of college football.
