The University of Miami women’s basketball team battled for 40 minutes Sunday afternoon; but, after taking a one-point lead with nine seconds remaining, Florida State (20-6, 10-4) managed to knock down the game-winning bucket with three seconds left, as the Hurricanes fell by a final score of 83-82.
Miami (13-12, 3-11) was tremendous on the offensive end of the court for the second consecutive game, completing the contest with clips of 53.4 percent from the field, 39.1 percent from behind the arc, and 68.8 percent at the free throw line. The Canes recorded 15 assists on 31 made field goals, and Miami scored 22 points in transition.
Haley Cavinder was phenomenal in the game, as she scored 27 points on 10-16 shooting from the field, 4-8 from behind the arc, and 3-4 at the free throw line. She also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, dished out a team-high seven assists, recorded one steal, and tallied one block.
Jasmyne Roberts also had an outstanding performance for the Canes. The senior scored 16 points on 6-9 shooting from the field, including 3-4 from behind the arc, while also grabbing four rebounds in the contest. Roberts logged a team-high plus/minus of +5 in 37 minutes of action.
Natalija Marshall poured in 15 points, 11 of which came in the second half, and the graduate student also managed to grab five rebounds in the game.
Hanna Cavinder had an impressive all-around performance, as she scored four points, grabbed six rebounds, and dished out six assists. Cameron Williams contributed 12 points and three rebounds for the Canes.
Miami jumped out to an early lead, as the Canes got a defensive stop on the first possession of the game, and Roberts buried a 3-pointer on the other end of the court.
Florida State responded with a 3-pointer of their own to tie up the contest at three points apiece.
Miami was outscored 12-8 over the next four minutes, as they found themselves trailing 15-11 at the 5:37 mark. The Canes reeled off an 8-0 run over the next 1:24, taking a 19-15 lead over the Seminoles.
FSU outscored Miami 10-0 over the remainder of the quarter, and Miami trailed 25-19 entering the second stanza.
The Canes opened the second period with four consecutive points from Williams to trim the deficit down to two points.
