The University of Miami men’s basketball team (4-17, 0-10 ACC) faced an 82-71 setback against the Virginia Cavaliers (10-11, 3-7 ACC) Wednesday night at the Watsco Center.

Senior Matthew Cleveland recorded his eighth 20-point game of the season, pouring in 27 points to lead the Hurricanes in scoring.

Fellow senior Brandon Johnson joined Cleveland in double-figures with 13 points of his own, marking the second straight game he has eclipsed the 10-point mark.

Five different Hurricanes tallied the first five buckets to give Miami an early 14-9 lead. However, the Cavaliers knocked down four straight 3-pointers to put the Cavaliers on top, 21-14, with 9:19 to play in the half.

Johnson knocked down his second 3-pointer of the night to put a halt to the Virginia run, but the Cavaliers continued to produce on offense, shooting 60.7 percent from the field in the first half to hold a 40-29 lead at the halftime break.

Miami came out of the locker room on a mission, outscoring Virginia, 15-7, in the first seven minutes of the half to cut the deficit to three, 47-44, at the 12:57 mark.

Freshman Austin Swartz kept the Hurricanes within striking distance of the Cavaliers thanks to a pair of clutch 3-pointers, but Miami could never completely close the gap, ultimately falling to Virginia, 82-71.

Miami next hosts the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday, Feb. 1. Tipoff at the Watsco Center is set for 8 p.m. and the game will air on ESPN2.

Nothing really to say here. We're terrible and just down so bad and in need of full rebuild. I'm talking everything--replace the hardwood and repaint the rafters, too.

The season ending in a little over a month will be a mercy. Only real thing I am proud of is that these guys-knowing how bad they are as a team are-still go out there and try. It's easy to quit when the going gets tough and this losing streak is deflating. We got a lot to do in the offseason and beyond to get back into the conversation.

It certainly looked like we quit at one point. That SMU game was a good example. But Cleveland and a couple other guys have turned it up a notch and have been fighting, at least.

It is every player for himself right now. Matt Cleveland knows he needs good film and numbers for an NBA combine invite and/or going to Europe.
I can’t believe we are just 2 seasons removed from the Final 4, but UM needs a complete overhaul of the men’s BB program.

I’m honestly surprised that Coach L didn’t have a better lead asst coach and wasn’t asked to do so. But success has a way of creating complacency.

..

He should have been asked to step down after last season's fiasco.... it completely evident that he had no idea what to do

It's hard not to be angry with L at this point. Miami should never be this bad at anything.
