As Tate Martell, Jarren Williams, and N’Kosi Perry continue to battle it out for the starting QB job, OC Dan Enos made clear after Tuesday’s practice that the competition would go through the fall.
“We’re not going to announce a starting quarterback this week,” Enos said. “These three guys continue to improve, all of them have good days and one will be ahead, then the other bumps ahead. It’s too close to tell right now. They are all getting better, it’s been really encouraging to see the pocket demeanor, the fundamentals - their eyes, their feet, coming off their reads.”
On Williams: “He did something I’ve showed those guys on tape for a week-and-a-half, and it translated. He did it. Then I was like `Oh my goodness gracious!’ They all have moments like that, then (bad) moments.”
On Martell: “Today might have been his best day - I thought Tate made some very, very good throws today. He’s talented, can run, has good arm talent. We asked him to learn a new system, new fundamentals and techniques, asked him to move to a new city. He has a lot of pressure on, let’s be honest, he comes in with all the accolades.
“At the end of the day, he’s just a young man and we’re trying to help him get better every day. Tate is going through the process - we had that talk on Saturday after the scrimmage, him and I. He had a good day today and hopefully he can build on that. He’s going to get better as he gets more reps ahead of him.”
Enos feels the offensive players are starting to settle into the scheme and stack good days together.
“Like most scrimmages there was, some good stuff we did, obviously a lot to correct,” Enos said. “There’s a lot to build on, though. From an offensive standpoint, the last three to four practice we’ve really improved. It’s been really encouraging to see the improvement in such a short amount of time.”
With injuries and ineffectiveness on the O-Line, Enos is hoping for some more continuity heading into fall camp.
“Offensive line-wise we need to get continuity, figure out who are our tackles, who are our guards, and we’re figuring all that out,” Enos said. “Once we get five guys, it’s going to be very important they learn to play with each other in fall camp.”
**With Brevin Jordan and Brian Polendey out for the spring, TE coach Stephen Field has had to rely on just two players, Michael Irvin II and Will Mallory, at the position.
“It’s been good,” Field said. “Obviously we want to get better every single day, we want to work on bettering our craft. Not having Brevin has been good for the other guys to get reps and I’ve been really impressed with Mike Irvin and Will. You see the progression in what they’re doing and that’s all we can ask for right now.”
On Mallory: “One thing I see is every day he wants to get better. He has that urge to get better, works hard at it, takes tough coaching, understands when he messes up, tries to fix those mistakes.”
On Irvin: “All he’s done is really come out here and work hard. He’s been quiet, humble, wanting to get better. Him and Will have a great chemistry together, and they both love the offense.”
On Jordan: “He’s going to be fine. Right now, we’re keeping him out, but he’ll be fine.”
