The Canes raided an ACC rival for a defensive tackle with the flip of former NC State commit Mykah Newton.

As first reported on CanesInSight, the staff loves the upside of the 6'3, 265-pound Newberry, FL product. Sources rave about his production (25+ sacks), growth potential and twitch. Like recent DT commit Donta Simpson, Newton has a massive lower body and is young for his grade.

Miami believes that he will retain his twitch as he moves inside from DE, and he is a high-academic kid with a nonstop motor. The early returns on the 2024 defensive line class are outstanding, and Miami continues to zero on kids with the combination of motor, twitch and footspeed.

Last year, Newton finished with 62 tackles (26 TFL), 13 sacks, 6 QBH, 3 FF and a FR. As a sophomore, he made 58 tackles (15 TFL), 14 sacks, 8 QBH and 2 FF. He is also expected to play some tight end for the Panthers.

Sneaky good pickup. Some people think he’s the better DL on that line , take that as you will. Imo he’s another tweener that fits the body type of Mesidor and Bain. But unlike them I think he starts inside.
