Diaz recaps UL, updates team, turns focus to FSU

Coming off the Miami Hurricanes’ 47-34 win over Louisville on Saturday night, head coach Manny Diaz said on Monday that despite the victory, his team recognized that they are still looking to put together a truly complete team effort.

“The most encouraging thing I saw was the team, in all three phases, was not satisfied with how we played against Louisville,” Diaz said. “We played hard for each other, did a lot well, but they realize we can be so much better and they came out to practice last night with an urgency to get better.”

In particular, the UM defense gave up 516 yards to the Cardinals, something Diaz said he will be looking to improve on this week in practice heading into FSU this weekend.

“The number of explosive plays that both teams had was about the same - four of ours turned into touchdowns, none of theirs turned into touchdowns,” Diaz said. “The first half, we played very good red zone defense… They snapped it 20 more times than we did.

“Watching film, it was obvious there were a couple of places we didn’t execute the way we wanted to. When you play Louisville, you have to stop the outside zone. We in the past have had some success against that scheme. It just didn’t happen. We didn’t do a good enough job correcting it during the course of the game… There were only five players on offense and five players on defense that graded out as a champion.”

When questioned about some of the holding non-calls on Louisville that the officials may have missed, Diaz pointed out that the league wants teams to send in all clips of plays they feel officials should have thrown a flag.

“They review all the plays we send in, send us back their reply,” Diaz said.

With the Hurricanes now at 2-0, the team turns their attention to in-state rival Florida State this week, and the Seminoles’ offense will be a challenge to stop according to Diaz.

“They present a lot of different problems,” Diaz said of FSU. “Way back when, [Mike Norvell] and Rhett Lashlee are descended from the same coaching family tree. They want to run the football, impose their will running and throw play-action off of that. They’ll have deceptive plays, trick plays to catch you with your eyes in the wrong place. We have to do a much better job of stopping the run and with eye discipline than a week ago.”

Additionally, Norvell will not be on the sidelines for FSU after testing positive for COVID-19.

“I feel terribly for Mike missing this game,” Diaz said.

As always, a fast start from UM comes with it the outside talk that Miami is “back”. How does Diaz keep the team focused and away from reading their own press clippings?

"We do know we live in that world, right? You're the worst or the best and not much in between. We talk about what is real. We have another game, have to go beat Florida State.

"We were very excited in the locker room on Saturday, but the next day, there wasn't a contentment that maybe we felt a year ago. There's a maturity level, different mindset that could ultimately make us different. But we're 120 minutes into this deal, I'm not ready to put a flag in the ground, `This is who we are now.' But I do like the spirit this team plays with early on."

In injury news, Diaz mentioned that S Gurvan Hall was playing against UL banged up, but he doesn’t see the injury as serious and Miami decided to rest him at the end of the game when they felt the outcome was in hand. Diaz said a few others players were in similar situations, but he had no major injuries to report.

“All the guys being nicked up are being evaluated through the course of today,” Diaz said.

Diaz also did not close the door on redshirt junior QB Tate Martell returning to the team next season after he opted out of 2020.

“We’ll revisit it after the season,” Diaz said.

Diaz said the team has a chance to get some guys back that were on the unavailable list last week for the FSU game on Saturday, including TE Larry Hodges and WR Jeremiah Payton.

Regarding transfer OL Issiah Walker and the status of his transfer waiver, Diaz said there’s not much to report.

"There's no big status update,” Diaz said. "He's just happy to be here."

Chief of Staff Ed Reed was a prominent presence on the sidelines for the Canes vs. the Cardinals last week, and Diaz feels he adds plenty to the team.

"He's so valuable,” Diaz said of Reed. “During the game between series, I'll come find him. The things he can see amongst our team that when you're coaching, you're so involved in what's going on the field, you miss."

TrumpyCane hopes Diaz was not serious about Tate Martell coming back next season. His ship has sailed.

The article was misleading about this. Somebody asked Diaz about Tate Martell, he didn't bring it up himself. Maybe it was Susan who asked. They asked if he could return to the team, and Diaz more or less got annoyed and blew it off like "we'll see after the season."

If you heard his tone, he basically said "no."

Also, he talked a lot about not being complacent and not being satisfied with the way the team played against UL... about improving how they set the edge on defense and so forth.... none of that made it in to the article, but I thought it was pretty important.

Took the time to watch the condensed FSpoo vs GT game and lemme tell ya them Noles were straight *** all **** day.

On Offense:

Blackman is the same guy he has been for three years. If that boy can't throw it to his first read (which he is going to stare down) then aint nothing good happening for the Noles. If he is on the move aint **** good going for them. If he is doing anything but dropping straight back and dishing it immediately it is a **** show. He airmails it, throws into coverage, has poor pocket presence, and fumbles when hit. He shouldn't be starting for them, all noles fans should be watching their games in befuddlement wondering, how did this happen?

They have two solid receivers in TE Camren McDonald and Tamorrion Terry but that **** don't matter because their O line is *** and Blackman is running the show.

They showed nothing at RB, had mild success in the screen game but zip on the ground.

Basically three plays. Variations of middle posts, rb screens, and QB runs when pressured on passing plays. Some RPO/zone read crap that we should crush.

On Defense:

Marvin Wilson is out of shape and lazy AF. Showed nothing against GT. I expect him to be up for our game but get buried by the tempo and become less of a factor as the game wears on. Flat out if this is what he is going to put on film this season he should have opted out. The only reason he is playing is probably to stay in shape so he doesn't show up to the combine pushing four bills. The rest of the line was uninspiring. If Josh Kaindoh comes back from injury he may add a little juice to the line up but overall they got handled most of the day. GT was surprisingly effective on short yardage situations.

Noticed they do have some alignments and coverages that require their DEs to drop into zone and cover large areas of the flat and short perimeter solo. Expect Lashlee to dial up somethin for that crap and burn em with it.

Amari Gainer is a solid player the rest of their LB corps doesn't tackle and looks suspect AF out there.

Their secondary also looked like a mess. Both of Samuel's INTs were slick plays in zone where he read the qb and made a smart play on the ball. Didn't see much out of him man to man. If King knows where he is on the field he should be easy enough to avoid. The rest of the secondary was inconsistent and didn't prove to be very effective against the run or pass. Safeties are undisciplined. Wouldn't surprise me if we get em with the trips play to Rooster 2.0 in some new iteration. They dumb.

Specials:

They ain't bad. They blocked 3 FGs in the game so we gotta watch out for that. Fr Travis Jay is their returner, he aite but didn't do nothing fancy against GT.

So overall they looked like **** and I aint expecting much out of em. I think they are not equipped to compete with us and lack the physical and mntal ability to stand up to what we are currently bringing to the field. If we can get pressure on Blackman early and prevent them from gaining any confidence via splash play this is a route of epic proportions.

I'd say there's an almost 0 percent chance Tate comes back. He should look at FCS or maybe G5.

Whether Manny proves to be a good game day coach or not, we will soon see. But a good leader searches for input and gives other credit as he is doing with Reed The Legend! He was also able to adjust inflight as he did with his staff and recruiting from 2019 to 2020.

It will not be as easy as your write-up. I expect us to know we are in a real dog fight through the first half.
